I'm Christa S., the breeder behind Firebird Show Dogs located in Sun Prairie, WI. Our focus is producing structurally sound, healthy Cotons while maintaining their joie de vivre temperaments. We compete in conformation in various venues (UKC, AKC.) Our dogs are health tested above CHIC requirements. We can be a lifetime mentor to you as a pet owner, conformation or performance.
Q. & A. with Christa
Why did you start breeding?
I showed dogs for many years, fostered many litters, and mentored under a number of wonderful individuals in many breeds before I decided to raise my first litter. I am a strong believer in proving my dogs in conformation and health testing above and beyond what is required. My passion is to share the joy of the Coton de Tulear with everyone.
What makes your program special?
I am the only Coton breeder in Wisconsin who titles their dogs in conformation and health tests. I serve on the board for our UKC National Parent Breed Club - The North American Coton Association as treasurer as well as show chair. I am also the current president of the North Central Illinois Pekingese Club. I strive to produce stable, well-rounded, healthy pets and show prospects.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel, Chondrodysplasia/Dwarfism, Multifocal Retinopathy 1 (CMR1), Neonatal Ataxia, Bandera's Disease, Primary Hyperoxaluria, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), von Willebrand Disease I (vWD I), Hyperuricosuria (HUU)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
