I'm Gayle W., the breeder behind Gaylan's Golden Retrievers located in Western North Carolina, NC. We have been breeding beautiful, performance Golden Retrievers for 40 years. We emphasize longevity, health, and temperament. We are also Conservation Breeders, focused on conserving the golden retriever breed as a hunting retrievers and with that, it's unique gene pool. We use genetic diversity testing and parental selection to keep our dogs' rare genes in the gene pool, while still focusing on health, temperament, structure, natural working ability, and longevity.
Q. & A. with Gayle
Why did you start breeding?
When I graduated from college, I planned to start breeding horses. However, I was a young Army officer so my then-boyfriend, now-husband of 40 years, Andy, convinced me that horse breeding and the Army weren't compatible. He encouraged me to consider dogs instead. We met our first Golden Retriever and fell in love with its beauty, intelligence, and trainability. That meeting began Gaylan's Golden Retrievers.
What makes your program special?
Above all, we seek to apply cutting-edge science to our breeding and puppy-raising program to produce long-lived, healthy, stable, and talented working Golden Retrievers. We created the programs taught in Avidog through our breeding experiences. We also focus on producing Golden Retrievers for hunting, search and rescue, and competitions rather than pets.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
