Meet the breeder

I'm Stephanie B., the breeder behind Golden Hills Retrievers located in Lake Hughes, CA. Top Quality Golden and Labrador Retrievers in Southern, CA. I'm dedicated to helping provide families with suitable companions that are well-bred for health, temperament, and beauty.

Q. & A. with Stephanie

  • Why did you start breeding?

As a teen, I did a lot of obedience training and desired to raise a guide dog puppy. My parents knew that giving up the puppy would be too devastating for me. They agreed I could adopt a purebred Golden Retriever. Which I dedicated to training to the highest degree obedience. We competed in obedience trials and she did great. My parents agreed to let me raise a litter and it was life-changing.
  • What makes your program special?

My program is special because I do it for the right reasons. Its the love for the breeds. Staying true to breed standards and disposition and being involved in every step. Staying up all night long to help in the whelping process. There are no limitations as to what it takes for a successful healthy mom and babies. I help to find the perfect match to suit families needs, that is my Reward.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Golden Retriever puppies are light golden. Labrador Retriever puppies are yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

From the moment I reached out to Stephanie inquiring about her puppies, everything flowed so easily and smoothly. She answered every question I had and even FaceTimed me so I could see the puppy. When it came time to pick up my puppy, I changed up my flight home to Alaska so that I could meet Stephanie in California. She met me at the airport despite my original flight being canceled and the second flight being delayed. When I found out I could not make it back on my flight because the airline did not have enough time to get my suitcase to the plane, Stephanie stayed with me while I had a bit of a panic attack. She calmed me down and stayed with me while I found and booked a hotel for the night. I know all of the hiccups put a damper on Stephanie’s day, but not once did she make me feel bad about it. I cannot thank her enough for all that she did. Now to talk about my amazing, beautiful, and incredibly smart puppy! From the evening that I met Melody at the airport, she was tail wags and kisses despite the hectic day and long wait at the airport. When I checked in at the hotel, Melody went potty on her pee pad and proceeded to follow me everywhere in the hotel. She also slept in the bed that night and woke me up 3 times to go potty. The next day we traveled from 11:30am (California time) until we landed in Kodiak at 7:37pm. That was 3 plane rides where I had to run to each gate to make the next flight. Not once did Melody bark, cry, or have an accident. She whined once when we were stuck waiting on the plane to take off from Anchorage because she was getting hot. Once I aimed the air on her and helped by fanning her, she stopped whining and fell asleep. Since being home, this girl has been a dream! Don’t get me wrong, she is still a puppy and has a penchant for pulling the dish rag off the oven door, but she is so well behaved. She has learned the command “drop it” quite well, lol. She learned within 24 hours (from her big sisters) to ring the bells to go out to the potty. She wakes me up once every night and then at about 4:45am to go potty. I could continue to gloat about my absolutely amazing girl, but I’ll stop. Take a look at the pictures I posted and I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that she is absolutely beautiful! I am so in love and have waited so long for her. Thank you, Stephanie for my best friend and for being there when you didn’t have to be!

It's not every day that you let a dog into your life, and for me, I was no exception. A couple of months ago, I decided to take that step after years of not owning a pet. From dog-proofing your home to researching how best to take care of your future companion, it's hard to ever feel ready, and for good reason. Aside from the veterans and well-experienced, few truly are ever ready: no amount of prep can account for puppy all a puppy's needs in all its individualistic glory. When I first reached out to Stephanie, I expressed both my interests and my worries about raising a puppy. Stephanie was not only timely with her responses, but she goes above the call of duty and walks beside you on those steps to getting a puppy. She provided information, starting supplies, and all the reassurance I could ever ask for throughout the process. I soon found myself driving home with a golden retriever puppy (that I later named Mango), unsure of the future but hopeful for what it may bring. A couple months later, and I can confidently say that I have no regrets. Mango is a puppy that loves to play and chew like there's no tomorrow. He's incredibly smart, perhaps too smart for his own good: he learned to climb up hardwood stairs on day 2 and to climb over dog gates a week later. He was potty trained in weeks and at 4 months, he knows the commands sit, stay, come, and paw. He's also as cute as they come, and I can't imagine him being anything but a looker and a lover to anyone he meets. Thank you, Stephanie, for all that you've done. And for those out there who are looking for a breeder to trust as you look for your next furry friend, look no further than here for your next companion. You won't regret it. Not by a long shot.

Stephenie was terrific to work with and set us up for success in preparation of taking our puppy home. We named him Motley and he's acclimating very well with his new big brother...our 13-year-old golden retriever, Rusty.

Stephanie was so responsive and made what could’ve been a hard transition and purchase much easier. She came up with awesome solutions, was super flexible, and the puppy is so friendly, well trained, and well taken care of even before my care. Definitely would recommend to anyone trying to adopt a golden retriever!

Stephanie with Golden Hills Retrievers was a dream to work with. Stephanie was very knowledgable on the breed and puppy care. She was incredibly trust worthy, responsive and genuinely cares for both the puppy and the adoptees. I enjoyed working with her and my new family member is thriving. I would work with Stephanie again in a heart beat. Grateful for her.
