Meet the breeder

I'm Leah W., the breeder behind Great Wood Danes located in Cda, ID. We are a small program who breeds for temperament and longevity in the breed. We love great danes. We have 3 of them and cant wait to add one more this year to our small breeding program. We have a great mentor and cant wait to continue this journey with our health tested dogs.

Q. & A. with Leah

  • Why did you start breeding?

We came for the love of Danes of course. We are obsessed with their goofy personalities. Cant wait to share in that love with other dane owners and soon to be adopters.
  • What makes your program special?

We specialize in health tested Great Danes. We OFA for hips, heart and eyes prior to breeding. We also need them to be family dogs for our children.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Great level

Great Wood Danes reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Great Danes.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
