I'm Jan W., the breeder behind Hare-Raiser Beagles located in Maurertown, VA. My dogs are bred for health and temperament with a focus on intelligence, trainability, athleticism, conformation, and ability to run a rabbit. My goal is to produce dogs that can compete in conformation shows, agility, and other performance events, while also making wonderful family and hunting companions.
Q. & A. with Jan
Why did you start breeding?
My first two beagles were from a reputable breeder and became conformation as well as agility champions. It seemed a natural progression of my passion for dogs.
What makes your program special?
In addition to breeding for health, temperament, proper structure and type, I am also striving to keep the original purpose of the breed (rabbit hunting).
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Musladin-Leuke Syndrome (MLS), Factor VII Deficiency
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
