Breeder of German Shepherds

Meet the breeder

I'm Connie M., the breeder behind Haus Merrell German Shepherd located in New Windsor, MD. Our AKC registered German Shepherd puppies are bred for health, conformation, working ability and temperament. I am very proud of the excellent breeding program which produces dogs that are fine examples of the German Shepherd breed standard.

Q. & A. with Connie

  • Why did you start breeding?

I bought a female 7 years ago, did health testing on hips, elbows and any other necessary testing and bred her to a health tested stud. I have learned a whole lot more since breeding my first female and am always wanting to better the breed.
  • What makes your program special?

I focus on health testing in my program, making sure to test for hips, elbows, DM, cardiac, patellar luxation, and temperament testing. My dogs have the following titles: CGC TKA SPOT CGCA TC BCAT DCAT RATI SCN CGCU. I spend a lot of time teaching my dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have stock coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include sable, black, black and tan, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Excellent level

Haus Merrell German Shepherd reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Dentition, Temperament Test, Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Full Embark Panel, Animal Genetics Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
