Meet the breeder

I'm Chelsea V., the breeder behind Joplin's Hippo House located in Tucson, AZ. Our hippo and weenie babies are first and foremost breed for health and companionship. They are pure breed Shar-Peis and Dachshunds. We test for SPAID & POAG/PLL and PRA & IVDD. Our dogs are intelligent, loveable, loyal, protectors, best friends, and life long family members.

Q. & A. with Chelsea

  • Why did you start breeding?

We first fell in love with the Shar Pei breed after rescuing our Mix Shar Pei Joplin! She showed us a deep love that we never knew was possible. She was a companion, a protector and our baby. We lost her in 2023 which lit a fire of passion to breed Shar Pei's and allow other families to know that same type of love.
  • What makes your program special?

We are a small family in-home kennel free breeder that breeds for healthy and happy hippos and weenies. Along with focusing on temperament and companionship. We pride ourselves on the fundamentals Joplin left us to take care of more fur babies going forward.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Dachshund puppies are miniature size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Dachshund puppies have longhaired coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Chinese Shar-Pei puppies include fawn sable, fawn, apricot dilute, isabella dilute, lilac dilute, cream, cream sable, cream dilute, chocolate dilute, brown, blue sable, blue dilute, black sable, black, brown sable, white, and blue. Dachshund puppies include piebald, cream, black, chocolate, brindle, chocolate and cream, gray (blue) and tan, chocolate and tan, black and tan, black and cream, and dapple. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

We were very selective when searching for a dog, but the moment we met Ozzy (formerly Pugsley), we completely fell in love. We looked through many breeders, and none compared to the professionalism and care shown by Joplin’s Hippo House. From the very beginning, communication was exceptional. We received daily updates on our puppy, had multiple convenient pickup options, and always felt informed and supported. I truly can’t express how much we appreciated their clear, consistent communication. To top it all off, our puppy came potty trained and kennel trained, which made the transition home so much easier. Our favorite part, though, was receiving a beautifully organized packet that included vaccination records, favorite foods, helpful suggestions, 30-day insurance, and microchip information already registered to us. Everything was so thoughtfully prepared. We are beyond grateful for the happiness they’ve brought to our family. And the cherry on top? The blanket they sent home with him — he still won’t sleep without it. ❤️ Highly recommend Joplin’s Hippo House to anyone looking for a loving, responsible breeder.
