Meet the breeder

I'm Mikayla W., the breeder behind Knightwood Danes located in Manchester, ME. Our dogs are raised with intention in a family environment, with a focus on companionship. We are committed to ethical breeding practices, responsible pairing decisions, and the long-term health of the breed. We work with both reg. and carefully selected unreg lines.

Q. & A. with Mikayla

  • Why did you start breeding?

I grew up with Danes, and my parents bred their brindle dane once when I was around 10 years old and it was a great experience. Since then, I'd worked with dogs all throughout highschool including working at a breeding kennel for Labrador Retrievers where I had tons of hands on experience whelping and taking care of pups.
  • What makes your program special?

Our dogs are all raised in our home, along side our young daughter. We have a busy house, with lots going on at any given time. Our dogs are exposed to all sorts of people from different backgrounds, young children, etc. Our dogs are family first, not "breeding stock" so we truly focus on the health (OFA) and well-being of our animals before even considering breeding them.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include brindle, fawn, harlequin, and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Excellent level

Knightwood Danes reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Great Danes.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
