I'm Maria N., the breeder behind Mariah Akitas & Basenjis located in Huntington, IN. I'm a preservation breeder producing top-quality, healthy pets from health-certified parents. To ensure each puppy and family gets the best fit, I match all of my puppies to screened homes. I provide lifetime breeder support to my buyers. Akita and Basenji dogs are my passion, and I am devoted to doing whatever I can to preserve, and protect these incredible breeds.

Why did you start breeding?
I have been participating in conformation shows for over 40 years. As a preservation breeder, I place great emphasis on protecting these breeds and producing healthy, responsible puppies to the breed standards. It is an honor to represent this breed and create opportunities for others to experience the same joy that I've found in raising these wonderful dogs.What makes your program special?
I am a proud breeder committed to only breeding dogs that have met the strict guidelines I have deemed appropriate to preserving these incredible breeds. My heavy involvement in the show world speaks to the standards that I breed my dogs by. I will always stand behind my puppies, and I offer support to my buyers for the lifetime of the puppy.Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Maria has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.
After buyers complete the application and screening process, Maria partners with them to find the best puppy match.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
