I'm Ilka W., the breeder behind Mayoke Akitas located in Hearne, TX. We have been fanciers and breeders of the Akita since 2005. We focus on dogs as sound in structure as they are in temperament!
All breeding dogs have their proper health certifications, including OFA hips, elbows, patella, eyes and thyroid.
We are happy to discuss our dogs with you, happy to help folks learn more about this breed and what reasonable expectations are for them when you take a puppy into your home. This breed is not for everyone, but for some it is an amazing fit for life!
Q. & A. with Ilka
Why did you start breeding?
I fell in love with my first Akita, Kuma. She was just what I needed at the time. Both a great protector and so affectionate and loving with me. I have always liked the Northern breeds, but the confident temperament of the Akita, along with the lack of barking and affectionate nature lured me in. I have been involved with this breed since 2005.
What makes your program special?
We not only breed for sound structure, even more so for sound temperament. This can be a tough breed when it comes to temperament, which can be difficult for some individuals to handle. We strive to breed puppies that are confident, yet very playful and silly. The goal would be for this temperament to remain as an adult. They do not need to be trained to be protective, this always remains in their nature, but have a happy, silly, sweet temperament is fun to live with and have in your family.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
