I'm Mikayla H., the breeder behind New Beginnings Acres located in Jefferson, IA. We are a breeder of Golden Retrievers with a focus on temperament, early neurological development and socialization. We do all we can in the first couple months of our puppies' lives to give them the absolute best chance at a long, healthy, and happy life with the families that choose to love them.
Q. & A. with Mikayla
Why did you start breeding?
Growing up we raised a few litters of Golden Retrievers from our family dog, and I loved it! I always knew I wanted to breed when got older and that I wanted to give my kids the same experience I had. My favorite part about breeding is being a part of bringing a new puppy into the world and getting to be such an important part of giving that puppy a great start in , what I hope is, a great life.
What makes your program special?
As a breeder I try to give my puppies the best chance at a great long life. We do thorough testing on all of our breeding adults to give their pups the best chance at a long and healthy life. All our pups go through ENS and Puppy Culture and are well socialized every day. We also Temperament test all of our pups to give you the best chance at getting the puppy that best fits into your family.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Introducing the crate is one of the things that we consider extremely important! The crate is an amazing tool when it comes to training a new puppy. It makes potty training so much easier because a puppy’s instincts are to not go to the bathroom in their “den”. It is also a great place for your puppy to feel safe when they are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or overstimulated. Plus it is amazing to have a space for puppy to be when you can’t supervise them. It keeps them and the things they would otherwise chew safe. I know crating your pup gets a lot of negative feedback these days, they say it’s a “cage”; but it is 100% the opposite. Crate training, done correctly, will provide your pup with a safe place and you peace of mind knowing your pup is safe and happy ❤️

The pups got a pen expansion this last week! We have started using pine pellets in their litter box which is a great starter for getting them used to going outside, as the pine gives off a very outdoor scent. They also get access to water all the time now and are eating big kid food 3-4 times a day😊

I am doing a Friday photo dump because it has been a while since I updated. We had an awful cold tear through our house this last week so I am behind in just about everything.😅 i’m hoping to get the pups four week pictures done at some point today🤞🏼. The pups are doing great. They are catching on to eating real food and are all play, run, eat and sleep right now😂. They are getting more and more curious, and we are doing great with our potty training! We all have several sharp little teeth now which means Daisy is saying she’s just about done with feeding them 😂

We are fast running out of room at the momma milk bar 😂. The babies now have several little teeth now. This is usually about when momma will start to feed them less and less, which means we are getting ready to start introducing puppy food!

We are in the very beginning stages of the potty training process, which is just teaching them that there’s a place to go and a place not to. They have already caught on very quickly and everyone is using the potty pads most of the time!

Mikayla is best of the best! This was our first time going through a breeder, and we cannot recommend Mikayla enough. She was kind, patient, and thoughtful while answering all of our questions. She provided many pictures and updates throughout the whole process, and made everything super slick. Her and her husband were incredible while picking out our puppy, and helping identify a perfect match for us and our lifestyle. If you’re at all unsure about which breeder to go with, I hope you take this as your sign! We will always recommend Mikayla and New Beginnings. We love our Winnie girl!🩷

I’ve grown up with animals all my life but when I entered motherhood, I found myself on that journey alone. For the longest time, I didn’t have the time to give to an animal because I was being a full time single mom. Now that my daughter is 15 and soon to be on her own, I find myself with a lot more time, energy and needing something to dote and love on. I had been considering getting a dog for a while and knew I wanted a golden retriever so I started my search. I found Mikayla. My experience with her exceeded all my expectations. She is invested. She responded to all questions. She offers advice and when it was time to pick my puppy, she offered advice on which puppy she felt would suit those needs based on her and her family’s interactions with the pups . She gave her advice with different options within the litter of pups and was open and honest about which would be the best fit. This is the first time I have ever been able to pick a puppy, I’ve only ever chosen from our local animal shelter and that was a good experience, but this one superseded all my experiences. I am so in love with my pup. She came into my life at the most perfect time and she is so perfect for me. She checked out perfectly at her first vet appointment AND Mikayla sent her puppies home with some vaccinations to get them started. I am so happy and grateful for being able to have the opportunity to work with Mikayla and will recommend her to those who are looking. Regardless if you don’t really know what breed you want or if you ride for the GR’s, her puppies are top tier. It was just great!!! I cannot wait to watch my puppy grow and become the full grown amazing dog that she is destined to be.

We had a great experience working with Mikayla! She kept us updated throughout the entire process and was always quick to communicate. Scottie is a happy, healthy pup who loves doing all the classic puppy things—playing, snuggling, and exploring. We’re so thankful to Mikayla and highly recommend her!

Mikayla from New Beginnings Acres is hands down the BEST!! Throughout the entire puppy process she responded quickly, answered our questions, posted consistent updates, and even texted us photos of our pup after we chose her & before we picked her up in person. Miss Lola has brought my husband and I so much joy - she’s playful, sweet, funny, and listens well! We can tell that she was greatly loved and cared for before coming home to live with us. 🩷

Mikayla was very helpful with my questions through good dog chat. She was also willing to meet me halfway so I could receive my new puppy. 🐶
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
