I'm Amanda L., the breeder behind Painted Horizon Acres located in Morris, IL. Dogs from our program excel as livestock guardian dogs. We keep in mind a variety of factors when breeding, including energy, temperament, and structure. Our goal is to produce balanced dogs that will be able to thrive wherever they are needed.
Q. & A. with Amanda
Why did you start breeding?
We were both raised on farms. I was raised with sheep in an area that has coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, etc. We had LGDs and they were an integral part of our operation. When we got our sheep, I knew we would need LGDs. Finding the perfect dog for us became very hard, because there isn't a lot of consistency within breeds.
What makes your program special?
Our dogs are very versatile. We are very small acreage focused, so our dogs learn from a young age to respect boundaries. They are trained by our older dogs, raised with sheep, chickens, and get lots of love from us and our kids. We select for dogs that do not roam, are excellent livestock guardians, and can discern the difference between a stranger and a dangerous stranger, and act accordingly.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
