I'm Melissa & Shane H., the breeder behind Paradigm Bull Terriers located in Struthers, OH. We are a small, in-home breeding kennel that doesn’t breed often, but we breed purposefully. We love our dogs like family. We are breeders who do everything we can to better the breed and ensure our dogs and puppies are able to get the very best out of life.
Q. & A. with Melissa & Shane
Why did you start breeding?
Melissa's grandmother showed St. Bernards for years from when my dad was a kid. Although she mostly had stud dogs, she did have a litter every now and then. It wasn’t until we got our second Bull Terrier, Penelope, that we decided we wanted to get into showing. After getting into the show world and having great mentors, we decided we wanted to have a litter of our own.
What makes your program special?
When we do a breeding, obviously breeding to the standard is key, but health and temperament are our top priorities. We don’t have children of our own so we consider our dogs our kids. We take breeding and placement of our puppies very seriously. Having great mentors in the breed is also key to success!
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Excellent level
Paradigm Bull Terriers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Bull Terriers.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA), Kidney Disease (UPCR), Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Lethal Acrodermatitis (LAD), Bull Terrier Type
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
