I'm Lawrence C., the breeder behind Pecan Grove Akitas & Whippets located in Alvin, TX. We don't breed often, but we are quite proud of the puppies we have produced. Our dogs are bred with dual purpose in mind. We want a dog that is pretty, but can also compete outside the show ring.
We are proud of our puppies, whether they are field champions, conformation champions, or simply the champions of someone's couch. We want to help people find their champions.
Q. & A. with Lawrence
Why did you start breeding?
We considered getting into breeding back in 1993, but the right dog didn't come along until 2014. Arya is an AOM winner, and an LCB winner at the American Whippet Club National Specialty. We breed with the goal of producing whippets that can "do all the things".
What makes your program special?
I think the thing that makes our breeding program special is the success we have had both in the show ring, as well as on the field. We're especially proud of our dogs that have won Best In Field, doing what whippets were bred to do.
Within the American Whippet Club, we have been recognized for champion production:
2021 - 5 Champions
2022 - 6 Champions
2023 - 4 Champions
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Betty, mom
Whippet
About Betty
Betty is an extremely smart and beautiful whippet. She is happy snuggling in your lap, as well as running in the yard. She was never successful at lure coursing because she was too smart for that game. She did earn her SC title, but she is a better hunter than courser.
Excellent health testing
Whippet Health Foundation Database, Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA), +2 more.
Ruth, mom
Whippet
About Ruth
Ruth is a female Whippet. Carefully selected as a great representative of her breed, Lawrence decided to make her part of their program. Lawrence has passed Good Dog’s screening process, which involved a review of their breeding practices, environment, and the mental and physical health of their dogs.
Steel, dad
Whippet
About Steel
Steel is a male Whippet. Carefully selected as a great representative of his breed, Lawrence decided to make him part of their program. Lawrence has passed Good Dog’s screening process, which involved a review of their breeding practices, environment, and the mental and physical health of their dogs.
Winta, mom
Whippet
About Winta
Winta will forever hold a special place in my heart. She was sold to a performance home due to incomplete pigment around her eyes; but even at 8 weeks, we knew she had potential. She finished her Field Championship with ease, taking one Best In Field, before hurting two toes in an coursing accident. And although it took a bit of work, she finished her conformation championship, earning a Dual Championship (DC). She has produced one Champion puppy, and we hope that her puppies will compete on the field as well as she did.
At six years of age, she is now officially retired. No more puppies. Her life will be chasing squirrels in the yard, and living the good life.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Pecan Grove Akitas & Whippets reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Akita.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
