I'm Janean M., the breeder behind Ptarmigan Curly Coated Retrievers located in Cadott, WI. Although I have bred several record-breaking show dogs, my emphasis has always been on temperament and health first. A healthy dog with a solid, stable temperament will be able to provide his/her family with years of great companionship as well as compete successfully in all sorts of doggy sports. We have produced AKC NBISS/BIS/Multiple group winning conformation champions and of the first 10 Master Hunters in the breed, 4 were produced by a Ptarmigan dog.
My bloodlines have stood the test of time as almost every U.S. curly-coated retriever breeder has my bloodlines in their breeding stock.
Q. & A. with Janean
Why did you start breeding?
My first dog, from the UK, had such a great temperament and joy for hunting, I decided I might like to try to breed a litter. He was used at stud by one of the top breeders of the day and his daughter was my foundation female. In the end, my first three foundation dams were all number one show females and appropriately health tested for their eras.
What makes your program special?
The dual-purpose dogs with stable, happy temperaments and outstanding show and hunting potential we have managed to produce. I bred the top-winning show female in breed history plus the top-winning field male was produced by one of my bitches.
My bloodlines have stood the test of time: almost every U.S. breeder's stock goes back to my bloodlines. I now concentrate more on breeding for companion homes and performance homes rather than conformation shows.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include liver and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
