Q. & A. with Niiyah
Why did you start breeding?
I got into breeding out of a deep respect for dogs and a desire to give back to the breeds I love. I believe every dog deserves to be brought into the world with purpose and the best start to life - physically, mentally, and emotionally. Breeding lets me do just that, while preserving and improving each breed for the future.
What makes your program special?
Every puppy from our program comes from parents who have been recognized as outstanding examples of their breed. Both parents are health tested not just to the breed standard, but beyond it. Whether destined for the show ring or a family home, each puppy is bred with purpose: to be a sound, healthy, and beautiful representation of their breed.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include red & white, red tri-color, black tri, black & white, black, red merle, blue merle, and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Rhodes Avenue Kennel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Miniature American Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
DNA Disease Panel, Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Hereditary (Juvenile) Cataracts (HC; JC)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
