Q. & A. with Beth

  • Why did you start breeding?

We are proud to be part of a Top Notch Whippet, Greyhound, and Stag Lurcher Breeders Mentorship Community. This community promotes responsible breeding in order to ensure that the Whippet and Greyhound Breeds, and Staghound/Lurcher Type's continue to thrive for generations to come. Our breeding's pairs solid temperaments, functional structure, ensure that are our puppies make loving companions!
  • What makes your program special?

We remain dedicated to our rigid breeding standards, though these standards do not allow quick supply of puppies and at times, no puppies at all. Yes, at River Valley Canines, there is a waiting period for a puppy, and if you have been considering getting a RVC puppy in 2023/24, we’d recommend you consider joining our waitlist now. We have decided to continue to be slow and deliberate with our breeding program, for several reasons. • Our careful breeding program takes time, and we consider this a benefit for our families. • Having a waitlist is our best way to plan and produce the right number of litters and puppies for our RVC families. • The waitlist allows us to carefully match family needs and lifestyle with the puppy whose nature and physical attributes are the best fit. You see, it takes more time, expense, emotional energy, and planning to provide our families with the healthiest pups with the best-fit temperament, and that your pup have a clear by parentage background of genetic testing and health screening, to eliminate all the inheritable diseases that we can test for and vulnerabilities as far as possible. With the increased demand for companion dogs we feel it is important for our families to be purchasing a puppy whose parents have been thoroughly health tested. The genetic and health screening of each of our breeding dogs is published. We have also invested a lot of time & training into learning how to choose the right puppy for you. We are committed to the pairings of our dogs to ensure pups meet the high standard in health & temperament. Sometimes we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to remove a dog from our breeding program because all of the health screening results were not up to the standard we have set for our breeding program. And sometimes breeding girls’ cycles don’t happen as expected. As you know, our dogs have proven themselves over time, with their versatile roles. We truly hope you agree that going on our waitlist for your puppy and the peace of mind we strive to provide our families, is well worth the wait.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Sporty Mix puppies are medium size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Lurcher puppies include red and white, red, black and white, and black. Greyhound puppies include red and white, red, black and white, and black. Saluki puppies include red and black tan and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

“Greyhound Puppies $2,200 Greyhound Lurcher Puppies $1,000.00 Whippet Puppies $2,000.00 Long Dogs (Saluki x Whippet) Puppies $1,200.00 When our adorable pups reach the age of 6/7 weeks, we embark on an exciting journey of evaluating their unique temperament, food and toy drive, function, and structure. This evaluation process allows us to provide families with valuable insights into each pup's personal performance, handler ability, and potential. We utilize the renowned Volhards Puppy Aptitude Testing (PAT) in conjunction with the Avidog Essentials Program to ensure a comprehensive assessment. To make the best match possible, we will schedule a date and time for a face time/video chat session. During this session, we will guide families through the available puppies, helping them find the perfect fit for their lifestyle. This approach ensures that the placement of each pup is based on the family's needs and preferences, rather than solely on color or pattern, which can change over time. For example, blazes may shrink or widen, and fawn shades may lighten or darken. Moreover, this process prevents situations where a pup may have an excessive or insufficient personality or drive for the family. Let's be realistic here, folks! All of our pups are not only amazing but also strikingly beautiful. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved, as we strive to create lifelong connections between our pups and their new families. So get ready to be thrilled and delighted as you embark on this wonderful journey with us! Our Policy Requires a Paid $200.00 Reservation Fee to HOLD a Puppy. No Exceptions. Please reference our Puppy Placement Policy or Contact us for more details.”

Working with Good Dog and Beth made the process of finding our beautiful new family member so easy. Beth was responsive, knowledgeable, and made drop off incredibly simple. Sully was already crate trained, comfortable with water, and good with other dogs and cats when we got him. We couldn’t be happier with sweet Sully!!!

Beth and Todd are absolutely amazing, and words can’t describe how satisfied I am with working with them and the quality greyhound mix puppy I have experienced so far. They both communicate so well on the status of the puppies and coordinating pickup. I’m so appreciative of how are considerate they are with the care package I received with my puppy on pick up to help give us a smooth transition. My puppy was so amazingly well mannered traveling through the airport. Absolutely no potty accidents, or behavioral problems that would draw attention. The potty training, exposure/social training done in their care is amazing work for him to be under 3 months and so well behaved. He is absolutely a sweet and gentle little boy, and is fitting in so well in my household. I highly recommend them and will purchase another puppy them in the future when I’m ready for a new baby in the house.

We brought home our beautiful Whippet, Freyja, from Beth at River Valley Canines in 2022, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with our experience. From the very beginning, Beth was an absolute pleasure to work with- professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about her dogs and their well-being. Freyja has been an incredible addition to our family. She was smart and easily trainable from the start, with a calm, affectionate temperament that makes her a joy to be around. It’s clear that Beth puts a tremendous amount of care and thought into her breeding program. Freyja is not only healthy and well-adjusted, but also confident and social, which speaks volumes about the environment she was raised in. What truly sets Beth apart is her commitment to her puppies and their families. She has always been available to answer questions and offer guidance, and she stands by her promise of lifetime support. That kind of dedication is rare and deeply appreciated. If you’re looking for a responsible, caring, and trustworthy breeder, I can’t recommend River Valley Canines highly enough. Beth is truly one of a kind, and thanks to her, we have the most wonderful companion in Freyja.

I highly recommend Beth and Todd of River Valley Canines. They are excellent breeders providing all of the elements needed to raise healthy puppies with good temperaments, including socialization, genetic testing and initiating training. When I picked my puppy up from their home, she was already as ease with being on leash, spending time in her crate and was well on her way to being housebroken. They are dedicated breeders who are responsive and accommodating as you navigate the process of inviting a puppy into your life. The frequent photos, videos and updates help you get to know the puppy that will be joining your family.

Beth and Todd made the experience very easy. Beth was quick to respond as I was asking questions about the available puppies and was happy to share pictures as he grew while we were waiting for him to come home. I'm based in Richmond, VA and Todd was able to do car transport from IA once the puppy was old enough, which was great. He communicated his itinerary and timeline and arrived right as expected to drop off our new pup.
