I'm Tonya N., the breeder behind Rowan Red Retrievers located in Woodland Hills, CA. We strive to prepare all our puppies to excel in their forever homes as service dogs and as loving companions. While not every pup in each litter will grow up to become a working service dog, we are confident that each one will become a treasured family member!
Q. & A. with Tonya
Why did you start breeding?
As a redhead from a family of seven redheaded children, I grew up used to social attention to my hair. I got a dog to match! When I started breeding red dogs 19 years ago, I realized how different they were from other Golden Retrievers in temperament and drive, and I noted that they also helped diffuse attention away from medical equipment or deficits of their handlers when used as service dogs.
What makes your program special?
Rowan Retrievers is a marriage between the working field retriever lines (more compact, muscular, narrow muzzle and head, dark to red coat, intensely focused energy, biddable and eager to train) and the show lines (longer flat coat, lighter colorings of gold and cream, larger blocky head and frame, mellow energy, lovable floofs) to make a dog best suited for service or an active outdoorsy family.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are dark golden. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
