Meet the breeder

I'm Kelley L., the breeder behind Schäfers Weg Shepherds located in Idaho. Our goal is to preserve and protect the Dutch Shepherd as a healthy, stable, multi-purpose utility dog as originally intended.

Q. & A. with Kelley

  • Why did you start breeding?

I was raised with Beagles and an avid rabbit hunter for a father. I loved watching the hounds do what they were bred to do. Once on my own, I had an affinity towards shepherds. I started with German Shepherds and gradually moved to the Dutch Shepherds. I decided to begin breeding so that I had first-hand knowledge of the health, temperament and working ability of my dogs and their ancestors.
  • What makes your program special?

We breed for health and temperament first and foremost. Next, we want a dog that is intelligent and has the desire to work. We are breeding for a well balanced dog mentally, that also looks like a true Dutch Shepherd. While many of the pups being sold as Dutch Shepherds are actually mixed breeds, we have been importing purebred dutchies that are dual registered with the AKC-FSS and FCI.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Kelley Lewis is the crème de la crème of working Dutch shepherd breeders in North America. Fantastic dogs with thorough health testing bred with just as much emphasis on looks as working ability, raised in the ideal environment for early stimulation and socialization. Communication with the breeder from prior to the litter’s birth, through the litter’s rearing, and after the puppies went home is unparalleled. Care for all aspects of the dogs’ wellbeing is very evident. Breeder is knowledgeable about the dogs and their training and screens prospective buyers carefully for a great match. I cannot recommend this breeder highly enough if you’ve decided that the Dutch shepherd is the dog for you.
