I'm Theresa B., the breeder behind Shire Springs Kennels located in Oklahoma City, OK. Shire Springs Kennel is a hobby breeder whose mission is to produce healthy, long-lived dogs with excellent temperament that exemplify the breed standard for structure and purpose. All dogs live in our home and are pets first.
Puppies are raised in our homes so that they are exposed to all normal activities in and around a household. They are well socialized with all types of people and other dogs, cats, and some livestock. Puppies explore the world through adventure walks on our acreage, car rides, and a variety of activities to help them grow strong and confident. We evaluate each individual puppy to determine temperament, drive, biddability, and potential for show and/or competition. Based on our evaluation and a thorough application process, we choose the puppy best suited to the new owners' lifestyle and plans.
I participate in a variety of sports with my dogs - Conformation, Agility, Obedience, Rally, Hunt Tests, Barn Hunt, FastCat - just about anything I can find to showcase the abilities of my dogs.
Q. & A. with Theresa
Why did you start breeding?
Oddly enough, I bred my first litter to fulfill an agreement. Going back to me being a nerd, I threw myself into it and did hours of research to make sure I knew what I was doing. That is how I found Avidog.
I then found I loved every bit of breeding and raising a litter. The animal husbandry science coupled with the pure joy of those little fuzzy bundles hooked me! Naturally, I stress and worry, but it is such a fulfilling journey!
What makes your program special?
I select a sire for the specific dam I breed for each litter I produce. It is important for me to match a boy that will compliment and/or improve the structure of my girl. No matter what, I look to ensure I breed dogs with excellent temperament.
At a minimum, I require the health clearances recommended by the national club on both parents before breeding the pair. I also utilize DNA data in my decision-making process. Both sire and dam will have earned a conformation and/or a performance title before being bred.
I truly enjoy watching the puppies grow into individuals. I pride myself in my ability to evaluate the pups and assign them to the right homes. But it is not only due to my skill with puppies. I spend a lot of time interviewing and communicating with the potential families so that I can match the right pup to them. I forge new relationships with each new family that go beyond delivering a puppy. Some have relied on me for training and health questions. Some have become very close friends. All are still contacted by me yearly. With me, this is a lifelong relationship.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our Golden Retriever puppies include dark golden, golden, and light golden. Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies include red and sable. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Rosie, mom
Golden Retriever
About Rosie
Rosie is a beautiful girl with lovely movement and conformation. She is incredibly athletic, loves to fetch everything and is the sweetest snuggle bug you will ever meet. Rosie has her Working Certificate, Junior Hunter Title, and working towards her Senior Hunter Title.
Ruby, mom
Golden Retriever
About Ruby
Ruby is the sweetest, most even-tempered girl I know. She gets along with all dogs, but remarkably, holds the alpha position in our crew at home. I think it is because she is genuinely respected by the other girls. Ruby loves to fetch balls, but is just as happy to heel beautifully next to me in Rally or Obedience. Her laid back demeanor has made her a perfect candidate for Therapy work and she will be certified later this year.

Looked for the right dog from the right breeder for a long time. Theresa really cares about her dogs, the dog owners and the breed. We feel like we really lucked out getting Kevin. He is by far the calmest, cutest Golden we have ever had.

I have to say this experience has been wonderful. Theresa had multiple conversations with me to find out what I was looking for in a pet and further share her background. I was very pleased with her experience in breeding and her knowledge of the Goldens. Ultimately, I chose her due to this. She made this process an enjoyable experience and so thankful for her helping. Thank you Theresa Penny is absolutely gorgeous ❤️❤️
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
