I'm Susan R., the breeder behind Statesman Welsh Springer Spaniels located in Chana, IL. My ongoing goal is to produce healthy and happy Welsh. My dogs are tested at two years of age for hips/elbows/eyes/thyroid per OFA CHIC requirements. Statesman pups are tested at two years of age for hip and elbow dysplasia using OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals).
Q. & A. with Susan
Why did you start breeding?
I wanted to breed our first Welsh. Difficulties since so few Welsh at that time and far away. Acquired another female and a male. They were the start of our breeding program. With OFA becoming the norm as well as the CHIC program, it became easier to locate and work with other health conscious breeders.
What makes your program special?
I never wanted to knowingly do a breeding that would produce an animal that would suffer. I have avoided breeding when I felt there was an increased risk for health problems. About five years ago we had a litter of four. Sire and dam both CHIC with very strong pedigrees and personal histories for good hips. All four pups OFAd after two years. Two moderately dysplastic had been altered early.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
