Meet the breeder

I'm Leslie S., the breeder behind Straw Hat Standard Schnauzers located in Warrenton, VA. Our dogs come from generations and decades of health-tested Champions, with the utmost care for sound temperament, form, performance, working ability and aptitude. I’ve been involved with Standard Schnauzers for 30 years and breed to uphold correct, traditional virtues while steering clear of damaging fads.

Q. & A. with Leslie

  • Why did you start breeding?

I bred my first litter of Standard Schnauzers in 1996, at the encouragement of my mentor after learning how to groom and show my first female to her Championship. This was the second SS she had placed with me and after instilling into me her values of providing quality and lifetime service to every puppy and owner, I wanted to provide life-changing companions to others as she had to me.
  • What makes your program special?

I’ve been breeding with the same health-tested lines for 30 years, working closely with my mentor still to this day. After all of these years, we now consistently produce very correct dogs, beautiful in both form and temperament, able to compete at the highest levels or excel at home as loving companions who can go anywhere and do anything.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are pepper and salt. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.
