Meet the breeder

I'm Lauren D., the breeder behind TaraFox Miniature American Shepherds located in Thomasville, NC. All dogs undergo OFA examinations and genetic clearances before breeding. All puppies undergo careful Early Neurological Stimulation and are properly socialized before heading to their new home.

Q. & A. with Lauren

  • Why did you start breeding?

My grandmother, Terri Cranmer, bred and showed Dobermans, German Shepherds, and Shih Tzus under the kennel name Tarahaus from the mid 1960s into the early 2000s. My mother, Patti Cranmer, bred and showed Parson (Jack) Russell Terriers as well as Miniature Aussies (now known as Miniature American Shepherds) for over 20 years. She created the kennel name Fox Shadow. They both inspired me to do it.
  • What makes your program special?

I am focused on researching the best ways to aid in puppy development. I do my best to stay up to date on new training techniques and am always trying to improve. The soundness of the puppies I produce is very important to me.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Excellent level

TaraFox Miniature American Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Miniature American Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Dentition, Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Hereditary (Juvenile) Cataracts (HC; JC)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
