Meet the breeder

I'm Heidi S., the breeder behind The Wildfire Ranch located in De Beque, CO. The Savocas are practically Colorado natives, now starting a home of their own. But while our family is new, we are not new to raising dogs! Heidi has been breeding Goldens since 2016 and we are excited to be bringing pups to homes in Grand Junction, Denver and the surrounding states.

Q. & A. with Heidi

  • Why did you start breeding?

When I was a kid I was finally able to set about getting my first dog. My family's only requirement was that it had to be completely reliable with children. That rules out a lot of breeds, and I soon settled on the Golden. How glad I am that I did! The rest is history.
  • What makes your program special?

We focus on a healthy dog with temperament being the first consideration, then striving for beauty. Our goal is a well rounded Golden that is wonderful at home, but still capable of adventure, obedience, and even the show ring. As for our rearing, ranch raised and family loved puppies are just different! They are well handled, in a way that only a young child's love can accomplish. :)
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include dark golden, golden, and light golden. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Good level

The Wildfire Ranch reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Golden Retrievers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia (Preliminary)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Ichthyosis, Golden Retriever Type

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis 5 (NCL5), Golden Retriever Type, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), PRA, Golden Retriever 2, PRA, Golden Retriever 1

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
