Meet the breeder

I'm Roxana H., the breeder behind Athena’s Collies located in Grapeview, WA. When we were pregnant with our first daughter, we decided to get a border collie as a family dog. We bought home a red mere girl who was the light of our lives and is still dearly held in our hearts. We decided to start breeding to make sure nobody ever has to go through the heartbreak of falling in love and losing your best friend too early.

Q. & A. with Roxana

  • Why did you start breeding?

When we were pregnant with our first daughter, we decided to get a border collie puppy as a family dog after extensive research into the best breed for us. We didn't know anything about the ABCA or any other registry for Border Collies. We found a litter for sale on craigslist for purebred border collies and were immediately hooked once we saw her photo. We keep up a tradition to now occasionally list litters on Craigslist. We knew nothing about asking for genetics paperwork or health testing or that merle colored collies can be prone to blindness or deafness if unethically bred. We brought home a red merle girl who was the light of our lives and is still dearly held in our hearts today. Over the next two years she became our child and best friend. We took Athena absolutely everywhere with us, she was the dog that would stay in formation in the mornings with my husband while he was still an active duty service member. During her short life she suffered from epilepsy and a complexity of other medical conditions. We took our anger, grief, and heartbreak and used it to make a difference. We decided to take the long road to learn about ethical and proper breeding practices. And that is how Athena's Collies was started. We decided to start breeding to make sure nobody ever has to go through the heartbreak of falling in love and losing your best friend far too early.
  • What makes your program special?

We sold our house in 2022 and went on a 2 year journey to meet with different working line border collie breeders across the US and Canada. We spend our time reading, researching, and observing to learn as much as possible before our second daughter was born. We selectively chose the right puppies to bring into our program. We are constantly keeping an open mind and learning with each litter. We strive to breed well rounded, healthy, genetically sounds, temperamentally balanced, and socialized puppies. We are constantly striving to do better and improve our program. We socialize our puppies from the time they open their eyes to our children, ducks, chickens, geese, cats, and other dogs. They are exposed to a variety of different sounds in our home and on the farm, textured, and diets (raw, fresh, dry, wet food) prior to going home. While this is common sense to us that puppies should have age appropriate veterinary care, we pride ourselves in going above and beyond where possible. We send all of our puppies home with age appropriate vaccinations, lifetime registered microchips, individual BEAR testing, fully dewormed, an initially dose of Simpatico Trip, and a puppy starter pack home with each family.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies include smooth and rough coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include tri-color, black and white, blue merle, red merle, and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Getting a puppy from Roxana

Roxana has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready to reach out, feel free to ask any questions about the breed, their program, or specific puppies.

Together, you’ll choose the puppy that’s right for you, stay in touch with regular updates, and plan how to bring your new puppy home.

Price

Puppy prices include a $250 non-refundable deposit and $1,750 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“This price includes a healthy, well rounded, and socialized in every possible aspect of their lives by the time they are ready to come home. We try our best to get as far into their basic training as possible (including potty training) to make sure they succeed in their new home. Each puppy is fully vaccinated, including rabies since our vet allows us to vaccinate all puppies early. This fee also included a copy of parents health testing, and registered microchip. Vet records will be provided. Puppies also come with food, treats, toys, and registration. We choose our sires and dams very carefully, therefore they are all the same price no matter the color or size. We do not breed for color only ability (work/ sports), and if a more "desirable" color does come out, they are the same price. We want to make sure when a deposit is made that this is a serious commitment and therefore is not refundable.”

Contract & health guarantee

Roxana may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Roxana offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don’t hesitate to reach out to Roxana directly.

This marks the seventh week since Panda joined our family! Roxana is a responsible breeder—she provided all the required vaccination documents and even shared Panda’s family tree when we picked Panda up. Panda is a smart, healthy, and cheerful addition to our home. I would definitely recommend getting Border Collies from Roxana!

Cait is doing fine. We have a fairly large backyard. In the morning I walk the perimeter of the yard several times. Cait does twice as many laps, usually at full speed. House training is going fine. We will keep her confined to the kitchen for a couple more months to make sure the habit is engrained. A couple pictures are attached. Cait likes to play on the lawn sprinkle.

Roxana and Athena's Collies are amazing. She posted regular updates, kept me informed and shared photos of our puppy as he grew. She made the process easy and has kept in touch since we picked him up. The puppies are very well cared for, and their parents are well-bred. Our puppy has a very classic Broder Collie look, perfect health and our veterinarian is extremely pleased. Athena's Collies are extremely responsible with the health and well-being of their puppies. I highly recommend their breeding program.

Roxana runs a clean, well-organized facility and clearly puts so much love into raising her pups. Her two little girls did a wonderful job helping socialize Nando, who is now a perfect gentleman with kids. We just finished a two-week road trip and he was an excellent traveler—friendly with everyone, adaptable, and calm when left alone. Couldn’t ask for a better start in life for our pup. Highly recommend!

Roxana was wonderful. She has a deep dedication to preserving a top notch line of pure bred Border Collies. Her family were all involved in the care of the puppies. They exposed them to lots of love from her children and noises from the outdoors. This has helped create a more confident puppy. Our puppy Ruby is wonderful and very smart. We are 100% happy with the experience we had with Roxana.

Roxana was very responsive, kept us updated on puppy’s progress, and even invited us for weekend visits. Our puppy, Rudy, is absolutely the everything and more that we couldn’t have asked for. Will definitely be going to her to bring home a friend for Rudy :-)
