Meet the breeder

I'm Heather W., the breeder behind Backwoods Labradors located in Lucasville, OH. Our dogs are OFA/CERF at normal or above as well as genetic disease tested with non-affected carrier or clear results before we even consider breeding.

Q. & A. with Heather

  • Why did you start breeding?

We bought our 1st lab as a family after I researched for close to 2 years. That day we came home with 2. When my girls got older I decided to genetic disease test and OFA certify. When they passed I decided to continue my research and have a litter of puppies.
  • What makes your program special?

My program is special because I am doing my best to get strong field lines with a thicker build that have no field testing and show that what is being bred is mininal improvement. I am testing those lines for 6 OFAs, 15 genetic diseases, and colors to ensure my labs are to the breed standard to the best of my ability.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black, chocolate, and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Heather was a pleasure to work with. She kept us informed of our puppies status until she delivered him to our, and his new, home. He joined another Labrador puppy a month older than himself and they have bonded wonderfully becoming BFF's. As I told Heather, I will recommend her to my friends who are looking for a lab puppy. When there was an unexpected minor health situation with another puppy in the same liter Heather put the puppy's health first delaying delivery until the minor issue had been addressed. With regards to GoodDog itself, while the screening filters on their website don't always seem to work they do offer a large selection of breeders. I was very disappointed with the hidden fees they charge for things such as insurance and other costs that you can not opt out of/decline. Not so sure I would recommend this site to friends, but will certainly make them aware of the hidden costs.

We are very happy with our experience working with Heather! Ethel, (named April by the breeder) is very sweet, intelligent, and easy going. (Of course she is a Lab puppy, with all that entails.) Not only does Heather do an excellent job of testing and breeding for the best positive genetic and behavioral results in the puppies, she includes toys, a blanket, a flea and tic pill, shot records, tons of advice and tips in bringing home your new “best friend.” This was not the first time we brought home a pure bred Labrador puppy, it was by far the best experience! From our observation Heather goes out of her way to exceed any and all expectations!!!

Heather was very easy to work with. She texted or called very quickly when I had a question or concern leading up to adopting my puppy. She made me feel heard. She is very knowledgeable of the Labrador breed and it is obvious to me that she is a responsible breeder. I would definitely recommend her to others!
