I'm Ashley K., the breeder behind Badlands Australian Shepherds located in Pierre, SD. I have been involved in Australian Shepherds since I was 4 years old. The breed is such a huge part of who I am, I strive to give back to the breed in a positive way. Not only do I work to produce health tested dogs who can succeed in the show and performance rings, I also strive to have dogs that can live and work on the farm.
Q. & A. with Ashley
Why did you start breeding?
I regularly participate in conformation shows and started breeding to continue and improve upon my prized Australian Shepherd line. It is an honor to represent this breed and create opportunities for others to experience the same.
What makes your program special?
Our puppies are special for so many reasons. They’re carefully planned through pedigree research and health testing before they’re ever conceived. Then they’re raised with ESI, ENS & Modified Puppy Culture.. and SO much more! They’re litter box trained, desensitized to noises, toe nail clipping, grooming, car ride, enrichment activities and basic training. We pour everything into our puppies!
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include black and blue merle. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Nash
The whole foundation and heart of Badlands Australian Shepherds program. I can’t thank Nashville or her breeders enough for everything she has done for me and most importantly allowing me to love this girl. She has changed my life in so many ways.
From the day Nashville came home, I knew I had something special. She was the most bold puppy I’d ever seen, She takes everything in stride. She doesn’t startle, she is eager to please and willing to learn anything I throw
in her direction. While she has spent the last few years focused on helping me build a program, She is trained through Excellent Rally and Graduate Novice Obedience.. Unfortunately, the last few times she was entered in a
performance show she came into season. We look forward to completing those titles soon! She has been a huge asset to my training classes as my main demo dog. Nash loves all sports, but Dock Diving is her favorite. She
spends the summers on the docks here at home (How lucky are we to live on the river) when we can’t travel. Most importantly, Nash is the dog that all families dream of owning. She lives for my kids. Nash is always happiest following around our toddler (and maybe sneaking some snacks of the highchair tray) or running with the big kids on the 4 wheelers.
Parent health testing
Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Badlands Australian Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Dentition
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
