We had such a lovely experience working with Dawn! My family had been considering a dog for years but only just decided recently to go for a mini dachshund. I’d been poking around Gooddog and had talked to a few other breeders thinking we’d wait for a few more months. Yet, when Dawn’s puppies came online we kind of fell in love with Mousse (formerly Jamie). Even still, we didn’t think the timing would work out for us but wanted to do an exploratory zoom with Dawn. Plus, Jamie got reserved just before our call! Bummer! But, we chatted on Zoom anyway for future planning and I could feel the warmth of Dawn’s process. The dogs live inside her home, are treated like family members, and Dawn only does a few litters per year between their two dames. I just got a great feeling about Dawn’s process and knew we’d want to work with her to get our puppy from a future litter. But, a sign from the universe I’m sure, the people who reserved Jamie had to cancel and Dawn let us know that Jamie was again available! “Can’t make this up!” She said! Dawn graciously gave us a few days to think it over and didn’t pressure us at all. In the end, we felt that little one was meant to be ours because of how it all unfolded! So far, Mousse has an AMAZING little personality. He fun and confident/social meeting people and hasn’t barked much. I really hoping to have a slightly less bark-y dachshund 😅 so I asked Dawn A LOT about mom and dad’s personalities! But I know it’s a little soon to know fully as their personalities don’t emerge more until adulthood and training will play a large part. But he’s loads of fun and not too vocal at this point. Tips for others once you decide on a pup from Dawn: get a snuggle puppy with the heartbeat inside. We’ve had no problems crating Mousse (next to the bed) at night and I’m sure it’s because of the snuggle puppy (and hot water bottle). He also did very well on the 6 hour drive from Dawn’s to our house. Also, get a small/extra small fleece jacket before you get your pup if you get them in the winter. And also, we had to pivot because of negative temps and bought a real grass-in-box-sod-type-delivery-thing so we can still potty train in the garage in this grass when it’s just too cold for him to brave the outdoors (we still do go out as much as we can, though…but these guys get so cold!) We couldn’t be more thankful for our experience with Dawn and Barks & Burrows! From the moment we first reached out to her, it was clear how much passion and care she puts into her work. What really made this experience special was Dawn’s warm welcome. She invited us into her home to meet Teddie, and it was so clear that he had been raised with love, attention, and proper care. Hank was healthy, happy, and well-socialized—everything we could have hoped for in a puppy. We took Hank to the vet shortly after bringing him home, and he came back with a clean bill of health! He’s settling in wonderfully and bringing so much joy to our lives. If you're looking for a breeder who genuinely loves and cares for her dogs, we highly recommend Dawn and Barks & Burrows.
