Meet the breeder

I'm Sheila H., the breeder behind Bear Heart Newfoundlands, LLC located in Cortez, CO. We are home-based breeders dedicated to bringing healthy, loving, and high-quality Newfoundland puppies into the homes and hearts of their forever families. We love our dogs and are passionate about raising our puppies to be the best family companions.

Q. & A. with Sheila

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have always enjoyed working with dogs as well as horses. I no longer have horses so I am focused on raising Newfoundlands.
  • What makes your program special?

Our puppies are raised in our home where they receive lots of love and socialization. It is my goal to produce strong, happy, healthy puppies. I do OfA testing and test for the known genetic defects of the Newfoundland. I feed my dogs Victor's Canine Elite and the puppies also receive NuVet vitamins. I do beginner training with the puppies also.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include white and gray, white and brown, white and black, black, brown, and gray. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Where do I start. From the time I started communication with Sheila till we picked up ash the experience was nothing short of amazing. Her standards not only show with how the pup looks or the lineage from which they come from but when they start to grow & mature they have a temperament that an angle would create. Our lives have changed since receiving ash and we have Sheila & her beautiful family to thank for it .

Sheila was amazing to work with. Sheila was very accommodating, our English Mastiff suddenly passed and she met us halfway to pick up Summer. Summer is very well trained good disposition sweet. Sheila also provided toys, a bag of puppy food and supplements I would highly recommend her !! Her grandson helps out with the training he is so good!!

Sheila was always quick to respond to any questions I had as well as setting up arrangements so I didn't have to wait to meet Raven. Everything from the communication to the pick up was smooth and one less thing to worry about. Raven, herself, is a total sweetheart and gets along great with all my animals. She is very calm for a puppy and her breeding shows through with her excellent temperament.

Sheila was easy to work with and updated us with pictures of our puppy while we were waiting for her to be ready to leave home. She also helped us find someone to transport our new puppy across the country.

Ziggy is already an incredibly addition to our family! Our trip to Cortez to bring him home was well worth knowing he comes from a breeder who genuinely cares about the health and well-being of her pups. The effort Sheila and her family put into socializing and training their dogs really shines through—what a gift to have a Newfie already familiar with basic commands and able to quickly adjust to his new home. The way Sheila and her family invest in the puppies’ upbringing, ensuring both their emotional and physical needs are met, is truly admirable. It was touching to see that bond between Ziggy and her grandson when they said goodbyes as he was Ziggy’s trainer. And what an incredible support system—sending you home with everything needed to help Ziggy settle in smoothly!
