Meet the breeder

I'm Sheila H., the breeder behind Bear Heart Newfoundlands, LLC located in Cortez, CO. We are home-based breeders dedicated to bringing healthy, loving, and high-quality Newfoundland puppies into the homes and hearts of their forever families. We love our dogs and are passionate about raising our puppies to be the best family companions.

Q. & A. with Sheila

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have always enjoyed working with dogs as well as horses. I no longer have horses so I am focused on raising Newfoundlands.
  • What makes your program special?

Our puppies are raised in our home where they receive lots of love and socialization. It is my goal to produce strong, happy, healthy puppies. I do OfA testing and test for the known genetic defects of the Newfoundland. I feed my dogs Victor's Canine Elite and the puppies also receive NuVet vitamins. I do beginner training with the puppies also.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include white and gray, white and brown, white and black, black, brown, and gray. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Sheila is a great breeder…I’m in love with my Bear(formerly Bongo)! She was easy to work with and answered all my questions. I was ably to FaceTime with her to see the pups prior to picking one and she kept me up to date of his progress while waiting to pick him up. You can tell that she and her family really care about the well being of their dogs. It’s my first Newfie and I’m glad I went with her. Bear is in great health and easily made the transition into my home. Best decision I could make!

We absolutely love Boaz, formerly known as Fritz! I'm so glad that we found Sheila, his breeder, because she was so helpful and attentive to our questions from the very beginning. Boaz is 1 year old and had lived in another home but had to return to Sheila when they could not care for him, and while we know the other family must be so sad to see him go, we could not be more grateful to have him as part of our family. He is an incredible dog. Happy, healthy, well-adjusted and more than we hoped for!! I highly recommend Sheila if you are looking for a Newfie, because she obviously does a beautiful job breeding with care and raises her pups with loves and care.

Where do I start. From the time I started communication with Sheila till we picked up ash the experience was nothing short of amazing. Her standards not only show with how the pup looks or the lineage from which they come from but when they start to grow & mature they have a temperament that an angle would create. Our lives have changed since receiving ash and we have Sheila & her beautiful family to thank for it .

We got Otis about a year ago from Sheila at Bear Heart Newfoundlands. It was a great experience! Shelia answered all of my questions and delivered him to us in Iowa. She was flexible with our schedule and delivered a happy, healthy puppy to us. Shelia explained the contract to us, brought all of his vaccination records and paperwork, and brought a collar and a leash for us to pick out. Overall, we had a great experience and have recommended Bear Heart Newfoundlands to others. Otis has been such a wonderful addition to our family, and we have Shelia to thank for that. Otis has a great temperament and has even become a therapy dog in recent months. People LOVE him and he attracts attention everywhere we go! We get compliments constantly about how beautiful he is. He is also a wonderful nanny dog to our many foster puppies from our local shelter. Thank you to Bear Heart Newfoundlands for our big, fluffy baby!

Sheila was great to work with to get our new puppy Bear. She was very knowledgeable about the breed and answered all our questions. Her grandchildren are so kind and love the dogs so much and it shows in the dog’s temperament. Thank you, Shelia.

Sheila was easy to work with and updated us with pictures of our puppy while we were waiting for her to be ready to leave home. She also helped us find someone to transport our new puppy across the country.
