I'm Gayle S., the breeder behind Big Run Australian Shepherds located in Oglesby, IL. We are focused on temperament, health, intelligence, and trainability. We breed traditional Aussies from performance titled parents. We believe in quality, not quantity. We also believe that all pups should remain natural with tails and dewclaws.
Q. & A. with Gayle
Why did you start breeding?
I have bred Aussies for over 30 years. I had always wanted a dog to show in obedience from the time I was a young child. My Aussies go back to top obedience lines, are very intelligent, and love training. I decided to breed my 1st girl and she and my male are now the foundation for many of the top performance dogs in competition today.
What makes your program special?
We breed for quality, not quantity. We only do occasional, well thought out breedings. Our parents are proven through therapy dog certification, performance, and health testing.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Great level
Big Run Australian Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
PawPrint Genetic Panel (Breed Specific)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
