Meet the breeder

I'm Josie C., the breeder behind Borderline Kennels located in Avilla, IN. We breed for temperament, health, and drive. The goal we set and which I believe is still the most important, is to produce healthy, well-rounded puppies that turn into amazing dogs!! I strive to make sure every owner has the ability to get the very best out of their puppy. I am always here for my puppy families to answer questions and to give guidance, whether that's the day after you take home your puppy or 5 years later. It doesn't matter. I will always be here as part of your support system.

Q. & A. with Josie

  • Why did you start breeding?

I've always been an animal person and fell in love with Border Collies. I love raising puppies! I love researching how they grow, both physically and mentally, and continuously learning how to adapt our program to best benefit the puppies that our families take home. This is a lifelong commitment for me.
  • What makes your program special?

We are special because of how much we socialize and work with our pups. It is a huge priority in our program! I am dedicated to the well-being of our puppies. I have been doing this long enough that if you can tell me what you are hoping to do and accomplish with your puppy, along with a little info on your current living situation, I am confident I can help you select a puppy that is going to work for you. We are currently ranked number 8 for best border collie breeders in the US. We take a lot of pride in that accomplishment.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include blue merle, red merle, blue, gold, lilac, red, sable, seal, and slate. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Borderline Kennels reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Border Collies.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome, Cohen Syndrome (TNS), Sensory Neuropathy, Border Collie Type (SN), Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), Intestinal Cobalamin Malabsorption (IGS CUBN Exon 53), Border Collie Type, Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), Early Adult Onset Deafness (EAOD), DNA Disease Panel, DNA Profile, DNA Coat/Trait Panel, D Locus (Dilute) DNA test, Dental Hypomineralization (DH), Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), Optimal Selection Genetic Disease Analysis (180+ Diseases), PawPrint Genetic Panel (Breed Specific)

Our experience with Borderline Kennels was great! Josie let us meet the puppies before we selected one. She answered all our questions and gave us a puppy starter kit with information on socialization and other helpful puppy training tips. Our new puppy is settling in great!

Working with Josie was amazing from beginning to end! Her experience in breeding definitely shows. We drove four hours to get our sweet boy and the process was amazing. He was just a puppy but so well behaved and smarter than any other pup I’ve ever encountered. When we’re ready to add to our family I definitely will be purchasing through Josie again. This is our Benji firmly known as Chief he just turned 6 months and is thriving! Thank you again Josie and family. Truly the best!

We had a great experience adding Ollie (former Ruffnut) to our family. Josie did a great job raising her up to the point when we acquired her, and since we have been very dedicated to continue socializing her and training her properly . She has been very responsive to training so far and we have received many compliments from our veterinarian on her behavior. We are so exited to continue this journey and see her grow as a great companion. Thank you so much!

My partner and I highly recommend Josie at Borderline Kennels. She is so transparent with her dog’s health testing and definitely puts the quality and safety of her pups over profit. We flew all the way from California to Indiana to get Passionfruit (now Juniper) and would do it again in a heartbeat. If we can handle raising a Border Collie puppy, we’ll definitely use Josie again for our next family member.

Absolutely seamless process. Josie made this so easy and little Pepper (formerly Jenny) melded into the family with ease as if it was meant to be. She’s extremely friendly to people and animals alike. Josie did an amazing job socializing- even initial four hour car ride was a piece of cake! Pepper can already do a ton of tricks and potty training is the easiest I’ve ever experienced with any other dog. You can tell the amount of love, experience, knowledge, and time Josie and Borderline Kennels put into their practice. With both the loving physical environment the pups are raised and the outcome with little Pepper I would recommend Borderline to anyone time and time again!

A wonderful experience! Josie was so helpful and answered all my questions. Our Woody has been a bundle of joy since we got him. Really couldn’t be happier!
