Meet the breeder

I'm Amanda I., the breeder behind Canami Shelties located in Alexandria Bay, NY. Our main focus is as a preservation breeder. Breeding to the AKC standard and having dogs that are good family companions, performance dogs and conformation champions. We do testing to ensure our puppies start with the best backgrounds.

Q. & A. with Amanda

  • Why did you start breeding?

I started showing dogs at 7yrs old and saw a Sheltie at a show and decided I would like one. I was able to get my first Sheltie in 1977 and she earned several Obedience titles and had some success in the show ring and whelping box. Some of my dogs still trace back to her.
  • What makes your program special?

I focus on sound dogs that can work both physically and mentally and are correct according to standard. We started testing eyes and for Vwd in the early 80's and followed with Cerf Hips . We currently do OFA Hips, Elbows and Eye checks and DNA testing for Vwd3, DMS, MDR1, DM, CNGA1 CEA
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Dermatomyositis, von Willebrand Disease III (vWD III), Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
