Meet the breeder

I'm Donna H., the breeder behind Canyon Ridge Australian Shepherds located in San Diego, CA. We’re a small-scale program with a big love of Australian Shepherds! All of our dogs have had health testing according to our breed standard, including genetic disease panels, OFA hip/elbow/eye clearances, and other testing when indicated.

Q. & A. with Donna

  • Why did you start breeding?

I began breeding when my older dog died, and really wanted a puppy from the breeder I got my first Aussie from. They were no longer breeding, but I was at a place in my life that I was able to learn and begin breeding. That breeder offered her bitch to me, along with all of the support I could ask for to begin my program. I have several other mentors that have supported me along the way.
  • What makes your program special?

I believe my breeding program is special because I put my heart into my dogs. I research health issues in Aussies, the genetics behind coat colors and breed traits. I absorb as much information as I can to be the most responsible breeder I can be. I work with my puppies to give them the best start in life. My goal is to send home puppies that are confident and fit in with their new families. We show our dogs in conformation in both AKC and ASCA. We also train in agility with our dogs, and are looking forward to our chance to compete! I have amazing mentors, and I learn as much as I can from them, taking the compliments and suggestions to heart to produce the best dogs I can.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red merle, blue merle, black tri-color, and red tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

We have had a great experience with Canyon Ridge Australian Shepherds. Our new pup is happy, healthy, and well adjusted to her new home. This is our first Australian Shepherd -- a beautiful tri color. Donna has been very responsive to follow up questions. Her advise on use of play pen was spot on. First Vet Visit went very well...Vet said that breeder did a great job with dog.
