I'm Kara H., the breeder behind Cedar Key Labradors located in Charlottesville, VA. My goal is to produce a great representation of the Labrador Retriever and Beagle and to continue improving their line with each generation. I know the health and status of every dog I have bred and am proud of the temperament and conformation of my puppies. I can provide extensive knowledge and guidance for any family looking to bring home one of these wonderful dogs.
Q. & A. with Kara
Why did you start breeding?
I understand the very important role that breeders undertake; that today’s breeders are the guardians of the future dogs. I wanted to do my part to better these breeds. My breeding program strives to maintain the unique characteristics of the Labrador and Beagle breeds while placing an emphasis on producing puppies of superior health, temperament, and conformation.
What makes your program special?
I am a handler of both Labrador Retrievers and Beagles. I do not breed my dogs unless they are fully healthy and genetically tested. I am dedicated to always having responsible policies when it comes to breeding, socializing, and training my pups. I love what I do and want the very best for my puppies and their forever families. I work with passion, heart, integrity, and truly want what's best for Labrador and Beagle lines.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include black and chocolate. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Cedar Key Labradors reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Labrador Retrievers.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
