Meet the breeder

I'm Laken A., the breeder behind Cottonwood Corgis located in Alvin, TX. I do not breed for color or off standard dogs. No merles, fluffies, bluies ect. I do my best to conform to breed standard as well as to preserve the breeds intended purpose. I will not breed dogs that hold excessive weight since that impedes their ability to work. It also makes them prone to joint issues as they age. I take great care to raise each puppy in a home environment that will prepare them for their lives as pets and competition dogs. They spend many evenings cuddling on the couch with me or my family. They are exposed to early training to set them up for success in their future homes.

Q. & A. with Laken

  • Why did you start breeding?

I was infatuated with dogs and dog competitions as a child. I was never able to engage with the sport though as it was just financially out of the question for my family. My parents were able to buy me a pure bred but off standard border collie that I raised and trained. She passed when I was a teenager. After I finished my degree , I knew I wanted another herding breed but something easier to manage than border collies. So, I found corgis. I started with just one female and wasn’t intending on becoming a breeder. However, I began researching training for her and realized that the world of dog sports was suddenly accessible and affordable to me. So, I began studying and training …..and now I’ve got 10 dogs and compete in conformation, barn hunt, and lure coursing.
  • What makes your program special?

I have a growth mindset in regards to my program. It has come a long way from when I first started. There are many things I want to improve upon and I strive to make sure that each generation is better than the previous. Im very quick to point out the merits of my dogs, but I am also open about their flaws. I think it’s important for buyers to get “the full picture “ to determine if corgis are a good fit for them.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red, sable, and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
