Q. & A. with Kim & Jerry

  • Why did you start breeding?

Jerry and I have been together since the 7th grade. We have been married 30+ years and we have raised four boys, all of which are married to amazing women. We have nine wonderful grandchildren, who are growing up way too fast! We have lived in South Dakota all of our lives. Jerry was raised on a dairy farm, and I was raised on a beef and grain farm. Country living is what makes us happy! During our 30+ years of marriage, we have had different breeds of dogs, many purebred - some small, some large, and some mutts. For me, some were too big, too smelly and too drooly, OR too small, too yappy, too hyper, and too annoying. I know that sounds terrible, but it is true in my case. I had given up on ever having another dog, and we had been dog-less for about five years. However, Jerry did not see us as dog-less! Each spring, he longed for another dog, and we frequented the animal shelters. I was also starting to miss the idea of a dog, but my idea of a dog was not even on Jerry’s radar. One day, I decided to do some research on the breed that I had always loved - the Australian Shepherd. After a few additional months of extensive research, talking to breeders, visiting breeders, talking with trainers and learning how to properly train a dog, we got our first purebred Australian Shepherd, Thor. This was 10 years ago, and both Jerry and I have fallen deeper in love with this breed. This breed is so smart, easy to train, and quick to learn, AND all about spending time with us. They are known for their VELCRO personalities and their awesome wiggle butts. But they are also known for their intelligence and herding abilities. They are by far the smartest dogs I have ever seen. They love to play hard, but also spend time with us instead of running out the front door to find another adventure. If we are working in the yard, they are working and playing in the yard right alongside of us. I discovered that Australian Shepherds FIT JUST RIGHT! They are truly our perfect match! Aussies are like potato chips - you cannot have just one! We now have nine and we love ALL of them! Before, we would never have even entertained the idea of doing agility courses or any of the other competitions, but this breed brings something more out of us and we look forward to trying these new things with our fur babies! All dogs, including Aussies, take work, but the reward outweighs the work by leaps and bounds. They are huge stress relievers and love unconditionally! They give VELCRO a whole new meaning!
  • What makes your program special?

Our goal is to better the breed, but also to produce a lifelong friend and companion! We raise our fur babies to be smart, loving, VELCRO puppies that grow into amazing dogs. We do this by focusing on pairing our dogs for temperament, personality, and also through genetics and health testing. Socializing is a huge part of this process and they are exposed to many things on our little ranch. This is an amazing breed and we want to ensure that there is high quality pure breed Australian Shepherds around for years to come!
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red merle, blue merle, black tri-color, and red tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
