Meet the breeder

I'm Laura C., the breeder behind Double-Take Doberman Kennels located in Aurora, IN. Our Breeding Philosophy Our goals as breeders have remained consistent and focused from the beginning. We are committed to a clear vision and have a well-thought-out plan to guide our program. While plans may evolve over time—as they naturally do—our core values never waver. Adherence to the breed standard is an absolute priority for us. The standard defines what a purebred dog should look and act like, and it serves as our blueprint for producing dogs that are true to type in both form and function. We strive to stay active and engaged with all of our dogs. While we value success in the conformation ring and the importance of being judged against the breed standard, we also deeply believe in the significance of performance events. These help us to evaluate our dog’s drive, temperament, and trainability—traits that are just as essential in a well-rounded Doberman. But breeding goes beyond titles and shows. We are committed to the health and longevity of our lines. We follow all breed-recommended health testing protocols through OFA and parent club DPCA guidelines—and often go beyond those recommendations. In addition, we conduct thorough genetic and color testing to ensure we are making informed breeding decisions that benefit our dogs and their future families. Our approach may be a little different from others, but we are proud of the dogs we produce. We stand behind every puppy we place—because we believe the proof is in the puppies. 🐾 We’re always happy to talk Dobermans! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.

Q. & A. with Laura

  • Why did you start breeding?

Training my first Doberman was as easy as 3 reps. They are beautiful/intelligent creatures that continue to fascinate me every day. My passion for them has only grown throughout the years. My fear is of the puppy mills/backyard breedings that take place which are causing major health problems for an already fragile genetic line. The focus must always be to better the health/longevity of this breed through research, and testing.
  • What makes your program special?

We Prove our lines! Each of our breeding dogs are titled in multiple working areas. Fully DNA/OFA Health tested, lowered COI, and we are constantly researching pedigrees for the best longevity. We are Knowledgeable/Experienced in the Doberman breed. Owner/Handlers for over 20 years. There are benefits for you in working with us as well (full European, clear lines, easy application process and screenings, lifetime family mentorship) We do things a little differently than most breeders! We focus on pairing you with the perfect puppy for your specific goals. Choosing a puppy should be based on more than a puppys adorable fearures. -As the pups grow we build a profile of their personality traits, social interactions, and individual characteristics. - At 6 weeks we perform Puppy Aptitude Testing (PATs), which helps us identify their personality, and temperament through their specific reactions. - We want to get to know you. We do this through our application process and phone screenings. This helps us understand your schedule, your lifestyle, your household, and what you want most in your puppy. - We work through the process of matching. Typically families have a few puppy options to choose from and ultimately you have the final say.. however we make informed suggestions on the right pup for you.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and rust and red and rust. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Just picked up my female puppy from Double-Take Doberman on 11/15/2025. Laura was great to work with from start to finish. This is my 4th Doberman puppy in 21 years, but my first with Double-Take…by far the best owner/breeder experience I’ve had. Laura is incredibly knowledgeable about the breed and very responsive with any questions or follow-up throughout the entire process. I would highly encourage anyone interested in top quality Doberman puppies to work with Laura and Double-Take Doberman Kennels!

My family and I just purchased a Doberman puppy from Laura Clawson/DoubleTake Dobermans. This was our first time dealing with a breeder. The puppy we received has exceeded our expectations. He was 11 weeks old and had no problem with a leash and or going outside to do his business. When it's time to go to bed, he actually goes to the crate and quietly goes to sleep. He already obeys some basic commands. He's loving and has won the hearts of our family. Laura answered all of our MANY questions and helped us with the ear postings by providing media links and videos thst gave us the confidence to do the ear posting.  She answered our phone calls and texts promptly and was very helpful and patient during the purchase process-never putting any pressure on us at all. DoubleTake Dobermans is in Indiana and we're in New York.  We had planned on driving but there were complications with that scenario. This caused a logistics issue that Laura immediately jumped into resolving by getting us a reasonable transporter that she trusted. The day of transport, we were given a tracking link to follow the 10-hour drive which, due to bad weather, became a 15-hour drive to our home. The transporter (whom I called "The Stork", lol) also kept me informed with periodic text messages. The delivery was EXCITING.  The little guy was none the worse for wear, came with a generous supply of food and extra posting supplies to get us started.  Our puppy has such a great disposition and was the missing piece for our family after losing our last dog in July. We highly recommend Laura Clawson/DoubleTake Dobermans to anyone looking for a Doberman puppy.

Laura did a fantastic job selecting the right doberman puppy for us. I was looking for a companion dog with a pleasant temperament and she carefully selected the appropriate puppy for me after performing temperament testing on the puppies. We are very happy with our puppy! Laura followed up after we brought the puppy home to make sure things were going well. She cares a lot about her dogs and it shows. Additionally, the health guidelines for the doberman breed that she adheres to is very important for the healthy dogs she breeds. We would not hesitate to purchase future puppies from laura.

I had a great experience working with Laura from the initial email on Good Dog to the final pickup of my sweet Kaili. Laura obviously cares about her puppies and adult dogs and is very knowledgeable about Dobermans. We talked on the phone for over an hour and I felt confident to move forward with buying a puppy from her. She has stayed in contact with me to check up on how everything is going and has been helpful in answering any questions I've had. I would recommend Laura and her wonderful pups to anyone looking for well-bred, well-cared for puppies. I am totally in love with my girl and our training is going well for her age.

Laura loves her Dobermans. Our first discussion was lengthy. She wanted to make sure I was capable of raising one of the puppies right. This was my first Doberman and she is always a text/call away. She always responds to my messages promptly even when it’s not convenient to her. Raising a Doberman can be difficult and having someone to help along the way is important. Get a Doberman from someone who will help you when needed. Laura is that type of breeder. She is dependable and willing to help. You want pictures or video of the puppy, no problem, she will send them.

I think Laura has been breeding Dobermans for approximately 15 to 18 years if I recall. She has some excellent breeding dogs with champion titles. I also love the fact that I was able to get a European Doberman, which was the quality I was looking for. The process was very thorough and I like the fact that she sort of interviews the buyer to make sure they are making the best decision for them and their family and for the dog. The following day she called me to see how things were going and gave me some advice about a few things which was very helpful. The puppy is doing amazing and slowly, but surely she is starting to win over my 13-year-old Weimaraner but it’s not been easy. Puppies will be puppies and older. Dogs are just older dogs and just not in the mood 🤣
