I'm Sarah H., the breeder behind Duendera Cardigans located in Colorado Springs, CO. There is nothing like a Cardigan. Intelligent yet stubborn, biddable but creative, silly and serious, loyal and loving beyond measure. Our program is built on the generations of breeders that have come before us to preserve the legacy of this extraordinary breed.
Q. & A. with Sarah
Why did you start breeding?
After a lifelong admiration for all breeds, we decided that the Cardigan fulfilled all of our hopes and dreams. Breeding was the last thing we were interested in doing until my puppy’s breeder told me that everyone who loves their Corgi owes it to them to contribute in some way to the future of the breed. I decided I needed to do my part, and here we are.
What makes your program special?
I am blessed to have so many fantastic mentors to model my program after. From public engagement to a lifelong involvement with puppy families, recruiting and retaining passionate owners, studying pedigrees, and honest learning and critique from other breeders. We ask ourselves not what we get out of one dog, but the legacy of love we are hoping to give our children 100 years from now.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and guardian homes.

Duendera Cardigans reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Chondrodystrophy and IVDD Risk (CDDY-IVDD), Full Embark Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
