I'm Margitta A., the breeder behind Enchanted Desert located in Edgewood, NM. My goal is to breed high quality dogs that are healthy, achieve longevity, have excellent conformation, and the best disposition! All puppies are raised with "Puppy Culture" and will be temperament tested at 8 weeks of age to make sure that they will end up in a home that is the perfect fit for them. I want to carefully select where they will live for the rest of their lives.
Q. & A. with Margitta
Why did you start breeding?
I got very involved with the Leonberger breed first and educated myself about the breed history, genetic, health, and everything else to do with this wonderful and still rare breed. Breeding has to be done with much caution because of the limited gene pool. My boy has been bred for the first time at age 5! -- I also always wanted a Standard Wirehaired Dachshund. When I found out that one of my Leonberger breeder friends has SWDs too, I asked her to please let me have one from her upcoming litter which she did. And that's how I got my beautiful girl Mia in the spring of 2019. She gave me 2 amazing litters of puppies, and I am keeping one puppy from each litter to add to my line of best quality dogs.
What makes your program special?
My thoroughness in regards to health, genetics, training, and overall wellbeing of my dogs so they will produce the highest quality puppies.
What are the different breed sizes in your program?
Our Dachshund puppies are standard size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our Dachshund puppies have wirehaired coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our Dachshund puppies are wild boar. Leonberger puppies are reddish brown. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Enchanted Desert reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Dachshunds.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Brucellosis, Dentition
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
OFA/CHIC DNA Repository
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
