Meet the breeder

I'm Lori S., the breeder behind Farmstead Aussies located in Cottage Grove, OR. We at Farmstead Aussies responsibly breed health-tested parents offering puppies who are less likely to have inherited diseases like hip dysplasia, bad elbows, and undesirable genetic diseases. Q. & A. with Lori

  • Why did you start breeding?

My best friend, “Trixie” and I had 15 years of adventures together. The last half of her life she suffered from elbow issues, as my faithful shadow she had the want and drive to work and play but it hurt her too badly. Trixie inspired me to offer folks a puppy whose parents were fully health tested for hips, eyes, and elbows including DNA testing for inherent diseases.
  • What makes your program special?

Our goal is to produce healthy dogs with amazing temperaments whose parents have been fully health tested. We are dedicated advocates for proper breeding techniques.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red & white, red merle, red, and red tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

This was my first time working with a breeder and Lori was awesome! Her love and care for each adult dog and every puppy was plain to see. She was very helpful as we selected the special puppy we wanted. When we brought her home she shared a lot of further insight about Ruby's individual personality and knowledge about making the transition as smooth as possible. We feel so lucky to have found Lori!

We could not have asked for a better experience! Lori is amazing, and she rightfully takes pride in her pups. We were able to visit, play with the litter, and ask all of our questions before making our decision on our beloved boy, Hazy. We truly feel like he was set up for success to start his new life with us, as Lori goes above and beyond with health testing, initial exposures, and breeding for both health and temperament. Lori has also still been available to us whether we have had any questions after taking Hazy home or just giving her happy updates and stories of our little wins with training him. Thank you for everything, Lori! I have definitely found my soul dog!

I had a lot of requirements that I wanted a breeder to meet for me to even consider getting a puppy from them. It wasn’t just about getting a dog, it was intentionally choosing whose breeding practice I wanted to support. Comprehensive health testing, litters with proven track records, fair and even uniform pricing among coat colors, willingness to take the dog back should something happen were all personally important to me. Farmstead Aussies checked all my boxes. Lori remained communicative, responsive, and professional. There was never urgency or one-track mindedness to “make a deal.” She’s protective of her dogs and they’re all the better for it. I was provided with up to date health records, toys, food, pee pads, and a blanket with littermates’ scent at pickup. Knowing that Astra (formerly Olive) would be flying home, Lori proactively accustomed her to a soft carrier so the plane ride would be easier for her. Astra is a little cuddle bug and I couldn’t be happier with her. I’ve been crate training her and she’s improving every day. She likes to sit in your lap, sit in the shade, and she doesn’t mind the racing pigeons in my backyard. She has a good off switch and gets along with my 14 year old senior dog who can be cranky. Should that time come (hopefully no time soon, my hands are full with one little wigglebutt) I wouldn’t think twice about choosing Farmstead Aussies.

Lori it’s an excellent breeder who is not just a breeder but is most concerned about making great partnerships between her kids and their new prospective people parents. She is the only one I have met who does behavior testing so you know just how much energy and patience you’ll need to devout to your new friend. She would absolutely be my first stop for any future Aussies!
