I'm Gordon S., the breeder behind Foothills Labrador Retrievers located in Buckeye, AZ. Our breeding program focuses on maintaining the unique characteristics specific to the breed while striving to produce puppies of superior health, temperament, and conformation. We are proud of our dogs and their puppies, and it is always our goal to preserve and better the breed with each litter.
Q. & A. with Gordon
Why did you start breeding?
It started in 1977 with Thumper a frisbee catching yellow Lab. From that point we were hooked. We wanted to make great Labs for family and friends but did not have the right foundation. Pat Corliss shared his English female with me, and that gave us the tools to work with. The result was breeding the #1 Lab in America 1983, and being the featured breeder in Labrador Quarterly Magazine in 1996.
What makes your program special?
Quality not quantity. I averaged less than 1 litter/year for 4 decades but what we do breed are very special puppies, temperament and confirmation wise. I never have a litter unless I’m planning to keep one for myself. We have a professional temperament test each litter to help match the right pup with the right home. Prospective buyers read their puppy’s report and all the littermate reports too!
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include black, chocolate, and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

We found the most precious, adorable, sweet tempered LITTLE BLACK LAB pup on the Good Dog website. My husband and I have been searching endless websites for a chocolate lab sister for our 8 yr old chocolate female Almondine. Not sure how long our search had been going on, when I came across a

Gordon is fantastic. Very knowledgeable and a great breeder. Gordon goes above and beyond with his clients. He had testing done on all the pups that measures 12 different characteristics. He them thoroughly interviews you to match what you want in a dog and matches that up with what you are looking for. Much better than just randomly picking a puppy blind. Highly recommend him and his dogs are top quality well bred dogs with excellent pedigrees. I am grateful to have found such a fantastic quality breeder that is local.

We had an amazing experience with Foothills Labrador Retrievers. Gordon was incredibly knowledgeable about the Labrador breed and took the time to answer all of our questions. It was clear that he truly cares about his dogs and wants the best for both his puppies and the families they go to. Gordon was extremely accommodating—working with our crazy schedule and making the entire process smooth and stress-free.
What we appreciated the most about Gordon was just how warmly he treated us—like family. We never felt like just another customer; He was genuinely invested in making sure we were prepared and confident to bring our puppy home. Milo is healthy, happy, and clearly well-socialized, which speaks volumes about the love and care given by Gordon.
We would highly recommend Foothills Labrador Retrievers and Gordon to anyone looking for a responsible, caring breeder who goes above and beyond!

Choosing to meet Gordon and this litter of puppies was nothing short of life-changing for me. I not only met my new best friend (a puppy named Nova), but I also met an amazing person with a story behind breeding his labs that I never would have thought I’d experience. After seeing several other litters of puppies, and mind you I was initially impressed at those circumstances, I felt like I had only visited puppy farms after the experience I had meeting Gordon and his family of dogs. My Nova has been nothing short of amazing, you would think she was 4 months old already based on how well she was raised by Gordon and his family. She already listens to me and behaves better than most of the dogs owned by my relatives. Yet she still has all the lovable charms of a puppy, like eating everything in sight and licking your face until there’s nothing left. I wish everyone had an opportunity to experience the wonderful impact choosing a puppy from Gordon’s family has had on me.
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
