Meet the breeder

I'm Heather W., the breeder behind Great Basin Hounds located in Cheyenne, WY. We hold ourselves to high standards for the integrity of our program. All of our puppies are socialized, nurtured, and loved! As breeders, we are very selective in our breeding decisions. We prioritize the health and wellbeing of our puppies, including temperament and conformation. We look forward to matching you with your future furry family member! As a reputable Dachshund breeder, I simply cannot guarantee a final adult weight. Genetics are unpredictable, and I’ve definitely had puppies end up bigger than their parents before. My primary focus will always be on the health, temperament, and proper socialization of my puppies to ensure they are great companions, rather than hitting a specific weight target.

Q. & A. with Heather

  • Why did you start breeding?

I started breeding when I was 17 for my animal science class. I did genetic charts showing all the possibilities that the babies could carry. I won state and was hooked. I went into college majoring in animal science (genetics) being my specialty.
  • What makes your program special?

All of my dogs are raised with my kids and other pets. They come spoiled and ready for new adventures!
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Our puppies are miniature size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Heather was great to work with from start to finish. She was responsive, easy to communicate with, and clearly knows and cares a lot about her dogs. The whole process felt smooth and straightforward. Our boy Archie is the best, we couldn’t be happier.

We absolutely loved working with Heather. She brought us our sweet pup, Miller, and was so kind and helpful throughout the process. My husband and I constantly refer to all of the advice she gave us and talk about how grateful we are that we found her. She truly is one of a kind and loves what she does so much! You cannot go wrong working with her and we plan to do so again in the future. Miller is almost a year old and is the healthiest, happiest boy.

Heather was absolutely wonderful to work with from start to finish! She was smooth, professional, and so responsive to every message — answering all our questions quickly and putting us at ease throughout the whole process. Our meetup and transition at the Denver airport went so smoothly, it made the experience stress-free. We named our puppy Denver, after the city where we met her, and she is healthy, playful, and absolutely beautiful. We couldn’t be happier with our new addition! Thank you, Heather!
