I'm Janine S., the breeder behind Gypsy's Charm Australian Shepherds located in Colfax, CA. Our girl Gypsy inspired our passion for this breed in 2007. She was a small standard size Aussie with a huge heart. Her talents included herding, obedience, agility and a great trail dog. Her legacy evolved by breeding beautiful, smart and talented AKC/ASCA Aussies with focus on behavior soundness.
Q. & A. with Janine
Why did you start breeding?
Gypsy was a small standard with a huge heart. Always eager to please and loyal to a fault. One day on a trail run I was surprised by a rattlesnake and without hesitation Gypsy jumped between me and that snake sacrificing herself. With an emergency trip to the vet Gypsy survived and our bond grew deeper. It was at this time we decided that her legacy needed to continue.
What makes your program special?
You can breed the most talented, smartest, healthiest dogs, but all of that is nothing without behavioral soundness. We have experienced owning a reactionary dog and how that creates so much stress in your life and home. Research has found an early development program such as Puppy Culture, create dogs that were easier to show, train, were less environmentally reactive, and made better companions.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include red merle, blue merle, black tri-color, and red tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Gypsy's Charm Australian Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
