Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Hawthorne Tamaskan located in Greater Harrisburg Area, PA. We are a dedicated and loving breeding program with a focus on integrity, health, structure, and temperament. In 2009, we brought our first Tamaskan Dog home. Our first litter was in 2012. We've never looked back.

Q. & A. with Tracy

  • Why did you start breeding?

Ben and Tracy lived in Bozeman while attending graduate school. Every weekend they traveled to Yellowstone National Park to work on Tracy's thesis film. Having given so many lectures on coyotes, Tracy was particularly struck when she found the Tamaskan breed. The idea of the Tamaskan Dog makes complete sense--as people are always asking if coyotes or wolves make good pets. Tracy & Ben both believe that the Tamaskan has special merit because of their striking resemblance to wolves. So many people would like to have a wolf or coyote as a pet: and the Tamaskan is the answer! Wild animals are never good pets; it's not fair to them and it usually ends up in disaster.
  • What makes your program special?

Ben and Tracy are long-time wild dog fans. Tracy researched coyotes for over ten years and gave over 40 public lectures on them. Her undergraduate degrees are in biology and cinematography, and she holds an MFA in Science & Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University. Tracy currently works for the Pennsylvania Game Commission as a filmmaker and photographer. Ben has a photography degree but returned to his original love of criminal justice and now works as a police officer.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red gray agouti, black gray agouti, and wolf gray agouti. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Before working with Tracy and Ben of Hawthorne Tamaskan, I had never worked with a dog breeder before. But I've been forever spoiled by the amazing experience I had with them! I found Hawthorne Tamaskan after researching online and discovering Tracy and Ben's extensive experience with the breed on a national level. Tamaskans aren't for everyone; like most northern breeds, few can handle the high-energy, independent, exceedingly intelligent, high-prey drive, pack-oriented nature of Tamaskans. I knew that going in (and had a lot of previous experience with northern breeds), so actually appreciated the rigorous application for consideration. First and foremost, Tracy and Ben want to ensure successful placement of their puppies. Once our family was accepted, I was absolutely floored by the amount of devotion, attention, and love Tracy and Ben give to their dogs, puppies, AND prospective families. Tracy sent incredible emails with an abundance of information and pictures almost every week, which I've subsequently learned is unheard of from most breeders. She gave detailed descriptions of the Puppy Culture methodology she and Ben used as well as in-depth information on crate training, toys, treats, exercise, and vet care. Tracy and I even talked through the timing of when to bring kittens into our home so that our puppy (Kato!) would understand the kittens were part of the pack (and not to be eaten). We were encouraged to visit the puppies after a few weeks, which was a delightful experience and gave us a full understanding of the way in which Tracy and Ben cater to their pups. And when the time came to select a puppy, Tracy called me to talk through (at length!) which pup would be best-suited for our family. We've had Kato for almost two and a half years, and Tracy and Ben still make an effort to remain connected. They're open to questions and Hawthorne families are invited to participate in a private Facebook group to share experiences, queries, and of course, pictures! I truly cannot speak highly enough of Tracy, Ben, and Hawthorne Tamaskan as devoted experts and breeders who are deeply invested in the health and well-being of their dogs and puppies!
