Meet the breeder

I'm Danica B., the breeder behind JMAR Kennels located in San Jose, CA. With over 50 years of experience breeding, showing, and raising Scotties. We are proud of the fact that we devote ourselves to making sure we raise healthy, happy, quality Scottish Terriers.

Q. & A. with Danica

  • Why did you start breeding?

My parents started to show and raising Scottish Terriers over 50 years ago. Show and raising Scotties is something I have done with parents as long as I can remember. Now I continue the tradition with my daughter and husband.
  • What makes your program special?

While it is not unique to us, we care for our dogs deeply. They are raised in our home from the beginning amongst all of us and our day to day lives. We spend time to make sure we are producing healthy, happy life long companions.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • von Willebrand Disease III (vWD III)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
