I'm Mallory P., the breeder behind K & L Ranch located in Independence, MO. Our dogs are bred for working and temperment and are gorgeous to too it all off ! Our current male Sushi holds titles in water rescue, and AKC retriever and CGC titles. All of our dogs are OFA cleared, hips, elbows, cardiac, and genetic. Program update on 06 Aug •…The Weekly Wag Newf-Letter 🐾 Volume: Weeks 5 to 6 in the Nursery Things have officially shifted into high gear in the nursery! Our 5-to-6-week-old Newfoundland puppies are no longer tiny, sleepy fluff balls crawling around their whelping box. They are now active, curious, robust little explorers bursting with personality, confidence, and determination. Here is a look at what our little giant-breed babies have been mastering in the nursery this week. 1. Socialization & Litter Dynamics At 5 to 6 weeks, the socialization window is wide open. The puppies are interacting heavily with each other and learning crucial canine communication: Bite Inhibition & Play: Through wrestling, pouncing, and tail-tugging, they are learning how to moderate their jaw strength. If one pup bites a sibling a little too hard, a sharp yip from their littermate teaches them instantly to soften their grip. Vocalizations & Body Language: Play barks, low growls, tail wags, and play bows are happening daily! Human Connections: Gentle handling by different people is a daily routine. They now run toward human feet with happy, wagging tails, eager for chin scratches and belly rubs. 2. Conquering Textures and Heights To raise courageous, stable adult Newfoundlands, early environmental enrichment in the nursery is key. This week, the puppies have been tackling a variety of physical challenges: Texture Mastery: Their paws have experienced everything from soft fleece fleece vet bedding to crinkly mats, rubber mats, smooth tile, carpet remnants, and artificial turf. Navigating these different sensory surfaces builds proprioception (body awareness) and prevents future surface shyness. Height & Obstacle Exploration: The nursery floor now features mini agility challenges—low balance platforms, shallow ramps, wobble boards, and single-step risers. Climbing up and stepping down safely helps build rear-leg strength and spatial judgment for a growing large breed. 3. Independent Exploration & Curiosity The pups are growing much more independent from mom. While she still checks in and offers nursing breaks, the puppies are venturing out on their own to investigate every nook and cranny of their expanded play area: Sound Desensitization: Everyday household sounds—vacuums running nearby, music playing, doorbells ringing, and pots clinking—are part of their background environment so nothing startles them. Self-Directed Play: Tunnels, hanging toys, ball pits, and soft chew toys keep their minds engaged and encourage problem-solving. 4. Nursery Routines & Weaning Solid Foods: The puppies have made a smooth transition from milk to rich puppy food mush/kibble slurry and are eating like true Newfies! Designated Potty Areas: Naturally inclined to keep their sleeping area clean, they are now reliably walking off their main bed to use designated potty trays/pads on the other side of the pen. Nursery Highlight of the Week: Watching a 12-pound fluffy pup proudly climb a 3-inch foam step, wobble for a second, and then leap off with a tiny victorious bark is easily the best part of our day!

Program update on 16 July •…How to prepare for your new puppy ! Bringing a Newfoundland puppy home is an incredibly exciting milestone, but preparing for a breed that grows this rapidly requires a specific strategy. Because "Newfies" can easily gain 3 to 5 pounds a week during their peak growth phases, the gear you choose needs to prioritize their safety, skeletal health, and massive final size. Here is the essential checklist to set your Newfoundland puppy up for success: Crate Training & Sleep 42-Inch Wire Crate with a Divider: Do not buy a small puppy crate that they will outgrow in a month. Buy a 42-inch crate that includes a movable divider panel. How to use it: Position the divider so the puppy only has enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If the space is too large, they will use one side as a bedroom and the other as a bathroom. As your puppy grows, systematically move the divider back to expand their space. Orthopedic Dog Beds: Giant breed puppies carry a lot of weight on rapidly developing joints. Look for flat, high-density orthopedic foam beds that support their pressure points rather than plush, heavily stuffed beds that they can easily chew up or trip over. Walking & Control Gear Martingale Collar: Newfoundlands have thick necks and heads that are often narrower than their neck circumference when they are young, allowing them to easily slip out of standard flat collars. A Martingale collar tightens slightly when tension is applied, preventing escapes without choking the puppy. Solid 6-Foot Leash (No Flexileads): Avoid retractable "flexi-leashes" entirely. They offer zero control over a dog that will soon weigh over 100 pounds, can cause severe friction burns, and actually teach puppies to pull against tension. Stick to a solid, heavy-duty nylon or leather leash. Skip the Harness: Avoid using a walking harness during their primary growth stages. Standard harnesses encourage pulling by engaging a dog's strongest chest muscles, and certain styles can interfere with proper shoulder blade development in giant breeds. Nutrition & Feeding Transition Puppy Food: Start your puppy on Diamond Puppy Food, which provides the precise protein-to-fat ratio needed to manage the slow, steady growth crucial for giant breeds. Follow the Bag Guidelines: Always use a standard measuring cup and strictly follow the feeding guidelines on the back of the Diamond bag based on your puppy's current age and weight. Overfeeding causes rapid growth spurts, which puts devastating stress on their developing growth plates. The Adult Transition: Once your Newfoundland is ready to transition to adult food (typically around 12 to 18 months, or as recommended by your vet), gradually phase them over to Purina ONE Large Breed Adult. Mix the two foods together over a 7-to-10-day period to prevent stomach upset. Toy Safety: What to Buy vs. What to Avoid Newfoundland puppies are powerful chewers with massive jaws. Toy safety is critical to prevent emergency surgeries due to foreign body obstructions.

Litter update on 08 July •…The grass potty pad went in today ! In a couple more days they will finally have access to outdoors ! The grass pad will help desensitize their soft paws to uneven terrain and the feeling of grass so they are not reluctant to try new things once they are outside. Using the grass in their whelping area continues to reinforce potty training and help them easily transition to know to potty on grass outdoors ! And as you can also see we set up their first puppy play gym to start experiencing new sounds, textures, and types of play and enrichment. In this first week puppies will have access to the play gym 3 times a day for about 30 minutes each play session. During these play sessions we encourage puppies to bark jump wrestle chew try all the new things ! Using these play gyms helps to create an excellent foundation for sound level temperments. It builds confidence and curiosity.

Bernie is a STUNNING show dog. He has correct confirmation and Temperment and comes from International Champion lines down both Sire and Dam. His pedigree is an absolute powerhouse. He has the sweetest temperment and gets along with everyone and anything. He loves grooming, swimming, cuddling and hanging out with us at work every day. He has such soft puppy like eyes and it's a joy to see him bouncing around the yard. He will produce gorgeous black puppies with temperment and showmanship.

Sake is the absolute sweetest dog I have ever met. She absolutely adores people and kids. She is such a good mom. She is extremely intelligent and really enjoys obedience and rally work. She will never turn down a good game of fetch. Her ideal day is playing in the woods, swimming the finishing it off with cuddles ( and yes she is a bed hog !) I just know her fun loving free spirit will pass down to her puppies. I love this girl with my whole heart, I know you will love her pups. Sushi-son, my heart, my love. I waited years for this sweet boy and carefully selected mom and dad to produce what I knew was going to be a champion. I was right! Sushi makes me proud every single day. He began doing water work last year and did phenomenal, he even had a real life rescue over the summer wow !!!. He loves farm life, is a king for grooming and love love loves his human and 4 legged siblings. He is the perfect gentleman l. He has received titles in obedience and in retriever/ water work. I'm really proud of this guy. And he is STUNNING just look at him I'm in love. Sushi is a massive boy her requires a livestock scale when he goes to the vet 🤣. I know he will pass down good form, big structure and heads, goofy and loving personality. I know his puppies will be of excellent working or pet stock. I can't even begin to tell you how special Mallory's dogs are. I am a big animal lover. I have raised purebred shepherd pups, rescue pups, french bulldog pups, and my first soul dog was an Irish Wolfhound. Hands down, our beautiful newfy pup from Mallory is the best puppy I have ever had. At 13-14 weeks, he will consistently respect "potty" "come" "don't pull" "crate" "wait" and "sit." He walks right into his crate when asked. Even if he just came out and is bounding around with energy, he will listen if I tell him to go back in his crate - which I do just for the training test. He has learned to sit and "wait" while I fill his food bowl. He will get excited to see me and jump once, but I remind with a no and he respects that, trotting at my side waiting for me to bend down and love on him. We have two baby goats and I have been able to teach him to not chase... so long as I am present. He wants to play with them desperately, but has learned to approach but give them 2 feet of space. We also have a 4yr old, 3yr old, and 1yr old daughter. At the end of the day, puppy teeth can be tough. Especially when little girls are running around in tutu skirts. But Gruffy will carry a toy in his mouth and that helps a lot. I can see that he understands they are special little people, but he also really wants to join in when they are playing. He genuinely wants to please us and a simple no is enough to redirect. I can recall Mallory guiding us to not train with treats and just use positive reinforcement. Pretty sure I rolled my eyes when I read that, but she was RIGHT! No treats needed. Just affirmation of good behavior and he picks it up. One day, he was outside alone for 2 ish hours... and then I realized the gate between the driveway and street was open the whole time. He never went near it. Mallory's dogs want to please. They want to stay at home but also take their own space and are not constantly needing attention. I am truly amazed and so grateful to have this dog for our family. 6 weeks in to owning one of Mallory's puppies I am already negotiating with my husband to get a second one... Above and beyond the incredible dogs, Mallory is everything you could ask for in a breeder. She is extremely accessible and seemingly happy to answer questions or share her perspective. At the same time, she isn't overly prescriptive or judgmental of owner choices. I was able to be very honest with Mallory about what our family was looking for in a dog and the type of life the dog would have - she has been supportive and thoughtful in helping us navigate. If you are seeking a very large, family dog - Mallory is the breeder for you. You will be thrilled and forever grateful.

Mallory has been terrific throughout the entire process of finding and adopting our puppy. Communication , assistance with questions about crate training/supplies and updates with pics/videos weekly.
