Meet the breeder

I'm Karen R., the breeder behind KNKR FURBABIES Cairn Terriers located in Winterset, IA. We are responsible breeders, certainly NOT a puppy mill, or a backyard breeder, all our females are on a healthy breeding schedule. We are overwhelmed with the number of people who are wanting our wonderful puppies. We certainly try to answer inquiries as soon as possible, while still spending the time needed to keep our dogs healthy and happy. In our dog world, "add to cart" does NOT get you a puppy! The waitlist is quite long at times and we do our best to place our puppies in homes that match their personalities and meet our requirements. We appreciate your understanding – we understand that patience is difficult when waiting for your fur-baby. All of our parents are health tested by Embark and cleared for over 201 genetic diseases and are all purebred AKC Registered Cairn Terrier pups. Your pup will come with the paperwork for a limited registered AKC Cairn Terrier, meaning as a pet/companion with no breeding rights. We love our Terriers' spunky nature and personality. We also love raising quality, healthy dogs for companions and therapy dogs. We do everything we can to produce only the best pup to live long, healthy and happy lives. Placing our pups with great families is our greatest reward.

Q. & A. with Karen

  • Why did you start breeding?

Started in 2004 when I rescued a little mess of a pup from a pet store. She came with paperwork to register her but I just wanted a pet to love and have her as my bestie. Everyone asked what kind she was and where they could get one. So I decided in 2006 to purchase a male, my sidekick Drake. He happily carried out his role and I then became a breeder. Drake and Trixie lived very happy lives.
  • What makes your program special?

I care about my babies and their babies. We don’t raise them out in the buildings behind the house, we raise them in our home and even in our beds at night. I have a buyer that will tell you how important this is and the difference it makes to pups. We strive to make the breed better and stronger for years and years to come. All our parents are DNA and health tested, results are shared.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include wheaten brindle, cream brindle, cream, red wheaten, and wheaten. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Great experience with KNKR Furbabies Cairn Terriers!! My Maisie is so much fun! And she get along well with my 10 y/o terrier mix Roxy well too. She love exploring the fenced back yard here too. Especially now with all these falling leaves to chase. Karen was great, keeping me posted with pictures and info about her, in spite of her own family health concerns. Transfer of funds and puppy went smooth once I got my stupid credit card issue resolved! My bad! Recommend Karen highly as a breeder!!
