🐾 Why Do Dachshunds Scarf Their Food? — Lavendell Dachshunds Education
If you’ve ever watched a Dachshund inhale a meal in two seconds flat, you’re not alone! At Lavendell Dachshunds, we get this question often, and there are a few perfectly normal (and very Dachshund) reasons behind it.
1. It’s in Their Heritage
Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs, designed to work independently and think fast. That natural drive can show up at mealtime, too. Eating quickly was once a survival tactic—finish first, or lose your meal.
2. A Touch of “Pack Logic”
Even if they’re the only dog in the home, many Dachshunds still have that instinctive mindset of, “If I don’t eat it fast, someone else will.” It’s not misbehavior—it’s instinct.
3. Dachshunds Are Food Lovers
Let’s be honest: they are professional snack enthusiasts. Their small size and busy little bodies make them highly food-motivated, so when the bowl hits the floor… it’s game on.
4. Routine + Learned Behavior
If they’ve ever shared mealtime with other dogs or been rewarded for finishing quickly, they can develop the habit of scarfing without even realizing it.
5. Occasionally, a Medical Reason
Though less common, sudden fast eating can signal hunger, worms, GI issues, or anxiety around food. We always encourage new owners to keep an eye on any changes.
⸻
🐾 Helping Your Dachshund Slow Down
A few simple tools can turn mealtime from a race into a relaxed routine:
• Use a slow-feeder bowl
• Spread meals on a lick mat
• Offer smaller, more frequent meals
• Add warm water to kibble
• Hand-feed young puppies who panic-eat
These small changes help reduce choking, vomiting, and tummy upset—and make meals much calmer for your little one.

🐾 A Brief History of the Dachshund – Lavendell Dachshunds
At Lavendell Dachshunds, we adore these long, low little dogs not just for their personalities, but for the legacy they carry. The Dachshund’s story began in Germany more than 300 years ago, where they were carefully bred to do what few dogs were brave enough to attempt—go underground to hunt badgers. Their long backs, sturdy chests, and bold spirits weren’t accidents; they were crafted with purpose.
As the breed evolved, so did its versatility. Different **sizes and coat types—smooth, longhair, and wirehair—**were developed to match various climates and types of prey. Miniatures excelled at hunting smaller game, while standards tackled tougher quarry. No matter the size or coat, the Dachshund earned a reputation for being clever, determined, and incredibly loyal.
By the 1800s, their charm had spread far beyond the field. Dachshunds became cherished companion dogs across Europe and eventually in the United States, where their unmistakable silhouette and big-dog confidence made them an instant favorite.
Here at Lavendell Dachshunds, we honor this rich heritage in every puppy we raise. From their bold little hearts to their soulful eyes, today’s Dachshunds still carry the same courage, intelligence, and devotion that shaped the breed centuries ago. And we feel grateful every day to help preserve and share one of the world’s most iconic—and lovable—breeds.

🎨 Understanding Dapple Variations in Dachshunds
Dachshunds come in a wide variety of coat colors and patterns, and one of the most recognizable is the dapple pattern. No two dapples look the same, and that uniqueness is part of what makes them so special.
✨ What Is a Dapple?
A dapple Dachshund carries one copy of the merle gene (M/m), which creates lighter spots or patches on the coat. These can appear on any base color—black & tan, chocolate & tan, cream, red, wild boar, and more.
✨ How Dapples Can Vary
Dapple expression ranges from subtle to dramatic, and both are equally correct. Some common variations include:
• Light dappling: A few small, scattered lighter spots. Sometimes so minimal they are hard to see on long coats until the puppy grows.
• Medium dappling: More visible patches creating a marbled or misted look across the coat.
• Heavy dappling: Large, bold areas of contrast.
• Patchwork dappling: A mix of small and large spots across the body.
• Facial dappling: Light patches on the muzzle, eyebrows, or ears—very common and very cute!
• Hidden dappling: In long coats especially, dappling can be subtle or partially covered, making it important to confirm through experienced eyes or DNA testing if needed.
Each pattern is unique—your dapple will truly be one of a kind.
✨ Responsible Breeding Matters
Because the dapple gene is a form of merle, double dapple breeding (M/M) can lead to serious, preventable health problems such as reduced vision, hearing impairment, and structural defects. Responsible breeders only pair one dapple to a non-dapple to ensure healthy, safe litters.
✨ Coat Types and Dapples
Dappling shows differently on:
• Smooth coats: Typically very visible and crisp.
• Long coats: Can be softer, muted, or partially hidden in the feathering.
• Wires: Can appear mottled, patchy, or less distinct.
Each coat type highlights the pattern in its own beautiful way.
✨ A Note to Puppy Families
Whether bold or subtle, all dapples are genetically dapple. The amount of visible pattern does not indicate health, quality, or personality—just uniqueness!
If you have questions about dapple patterns, genetics, or choosing the right puppy for your family, I’m always happy to help educate and guide prospective families.

The Dachshund Stink-Eye: A Scientific Breakdown 🐾😂
Ah yes, the Dachshund stink-eye.
A facial expression so powerful, it should come with a warning label.
This look says ten things at once, including but not limited to:
• “I SAW you pick up the leash. I did NOT agree to a walk.”
• “You moved your leg and disturbed my nap. I will remember this.”
• “You offered me a treat… but it was the wrong treat.”
• “Explain why the cat gets fed first.”
• “I heard the word ‘bath.’ We need to talk.”
• “You left the house without me. Again. Unacceptable.”
• “I know you’re eating chicken. I can smell betrayal.”
The stink-eye is the dachshund’s most powerful communication method.
It is 60% attitude, 30% drama, and 10% inherited from their royal sausage ancestors who took nothing from no one.
In short:
The Dachshund Stink-Eye = judgment + disappointment + side-eye supremacy.
Use responsibly.

Potty Training According to a Dachshund 🐾🤌
Hi. I’m a dachshund.
And I’d like to explain potty training… from my perspective.
First of all,
I absolutely know where the potty spot is.
I just don’t prefer it.
Day 1:
Human: “Outside! Go potty!”
Me: Sniffs air
Me: Detects a breeze that offends me
Me: “Absolutely not.”
Day 3:
Human takes me to the grass.
The wet grass.
The cold grass.
The grass that touched my royal paws.
I filed a complaint.
Day 6:
Human: “Why won’t you go outside?”
Me: “Because I went inside. Five minutes ago. Please keep up.”
Day 9:
I peed next to the door.
ON PURPOSE.
So they know I tried.
Day 14:
Human cried when I finally peed outside.
I did it for morale.
They needed the win.
Day 20:
Now I pee outside all the time.
Because guess who gets a treat EVERY. SINGLE. TIME?
👉 This guy.
Anyway, you’re welcome humans.
Potty training complete.
10/10 performance on my part.

Owning a Dachshund takes three things: patience, humor, and a spine of steel—because you’ll need it when this 20-plus-pound sausage with legs decides you work for them.
It takes patience to wait while they sniff every single blade of grass like it’s part of an FBI investigation.
It takes humor to laugh when they bark ferociously at a leaf, a cloud, or their own reflection.
And it takes love—a deep, unconditional kind of love—to forgive them for rearranging your throw pillows, stealing your socks, and claiming the warmest spot on your bed like a tiny, snoring king (or queen).
In return? You get a best friend with the courage of a lion, the loyalty of a shadow, and the snuggle skills of a heated blanket with fur and attitude.

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

Mendy was absolutely incredible throughout the entire process. She was extremely responsive to texts and calls and gave me updates on how Ripley was doing from the moment we started speaking until we met her to pick him up. When we picked him up, all of his paperwork was up-to-date and organized, and she even gave us a blanket that smelled like Ripley‘s mom for extra comfort. On top of that, she gave us some extra food to make sure he was eating what he’s used to and she even groomed him the morning of the day we picked him up. You can tell when a dog has come from a very loving environment, and that was more than apparent from the moment I met Mendy and Ripley. Mendy loves and cares for her pups as if they were part of her family. I will absolutely be getting my next Dachshund from Mendy.

Mendy was so responsive and helpful - she went out of her way (truly!) to unite us with our sweet puppy! He came to us clean, happy, and healthy and is already thriving in his new home!
She’s continued to be helpful and responsive since drop off - and supplied us with toys and treats that remind him of home, helping him settle in ever quicker.
We couldn’t be happier with our sweet pup, or with the experience we had with Mendy!
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
