I'm Terri H., the breeder behind Marstad located in Livermore, CA. I am a trainer, vet tech, & breed club member. I have been breeding for fifty years and counting to produce healthy, quality pups. At Marstad, we focus on breeding excellence. I pursue my vision of these breeds through conformation, showing, obedience training, and training and participation in AKC Hunt Tests.
Q. & A. with Terri
Why did you start breeding?
One of the veterinarians I worked with was going to the Golden Gate Kennel Club benched dog show so I asked her to check out the Labrador breeders. She brought me a card from Jane Borders, Braemar Labradors. Jane did not have any puppies available at the time, but referred me to Ginger and Don Campbell, Campbellcroft Labradors, who had recently bred to one of Jane’s stud dogs. This began my association with Ginger and Don through my first Campbellcroft Labrador—Campbellcroft Bristol Cream UD JH in 1980. That collaboration continued for many years, including my acquisition of more Campbellcroft Labradors and co-breeding several litters. I am newer to breeding Sussex Spaniels, but I am working with a co-breeder and mentor to fine-tune my program.
What makes your program special?
First, I am a professional handler of these breeds. I do only limited breeding and my breeding dogs are screened for the currently recognized health problems using the latest testing protocols including joints, eyes, hearts, and Exercise Induced Collapse. Second, I am a vet-tech, and I have dedicated my life to animals. I understand the importance of dog health, temperament, and structure. Every breeding decision is made accordingly. We are constantly improving our breeding program and work closely within the community to do so. I also am a dog-trainer, and I'm committed to setting both you and your pup up for the best lives possible.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
