Meet the breeder

I'm Shelby W., the breeder behind Misty Labs located in New Hanover, NJ. Our dogs are bred with families in mind. We aim to breed gentle, family pets and place them in loving homes. Our puppies come having been dewormed, vaccinated and health checked by a veterinarian. Both parents will have been genetically tested and with OFA hips and elbows.

Q. & A. with Shelby

  • Why did you start breeding?

We chose to breed our dog after experiencing firsthand the intelligence, loyalty, and gentle nature of Labradors. I saw how truly exceptional they are as family companions. Their steady temperament and eagerness to please make them wonderful additions to homes of all kinds, and I felt called to contribute responsibly to preserving and sharing those qualities with other families.
  • What makes your program special?

Though I am a newer breeder of Labrador Retrievers, I combine years of breed knowledge and experience with a small, home-based program where each puppy is raised with individual care, attention, and love. Our puppies are raised alongside our family and exposed to children, cats and other dogs. We use ENS and introduce our puppies to new experiences in a way that helps them grow in confidence.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Excellent level

Misty Labs reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Labrador Retrievers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM), D Locus (Dilute) DNA test

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
